Review:
Let's face it, everyone loves a good prison break story. We are always curious as to how inmates make their way around security and concrete walls to escape. Just remember all those stories about Alcatraz or "The Shawshank Redemption." FOX's "Prison Break" tries to deliver just that... as a tv series!
The pilot of "Prison Break" starts off with various scenes not making much sense. But everything starts coming together when the puzzle starts to come into shape and we see that the lead (Michael, played by Wentworth Miller) gets himself arrested and pleads guilty. He wants to make sure he ends up in the same prison his brother Lincoln is. Lincoln is accused of having murdered the vice-president's brother. The man keeps saying that he was set up even if evidence says otherwise. Lincoln was given the death penalty and all appeals haven't worked. Michael devised a plan to enter the prison and escape with his brother.
"I'm getting you out of here!" - Michael
"It's impossible" - Lincoln
"Not if you designed the place, it isn't." - Michael
As you can see, Michael knows the place. He also is bright enough to have studied the past of some of the inmates in order to get a few favors when inside prison. He also claims he has diabetes in order to get access to the infirmary. The guy is brilliant!
"Prison Break" delivers on the prison part of it all. We see various types of inmates, we witness illegal exchanges, conjugal visits, fighting, gangs, etc. The prison sets are remarkable so are the aerial shots of it. The two lead actors (Miller and Purcell) really look like they could be brothers and both show great acting skills. The ladies are less convincing but carry their roles in an acceptable way. There isn't much of a soundtrack but this may be fixed in the version of the pilot that will air next month. However, even though I didn't notice much a soundtrack, I'm not sure it would have added that much to the episode. It was good nonetheless.
Even if I'm not sure this series can go beyond one year on the air (the storyline doesn't allow it much), "Prison Break" has an interesting premise with a good script. This drama will pique viewers interest and will have them coming back for more.
"Prison Break" will debut on Monday, August 29 with a two-hour season premiere starting at 8 p.m. on FOX. It will settle in its normal time period (Mondays at 9 p.m.) starting on September 5.
Pilot review: Prison Break (FOX)Quelle: Livejournal/Spoilerfix
premise: guy on death row in prison for a crime he says he didn't commit. Smart brother commits crime to get in same prison as his brother. The idea: bust him out.
Personell:
Dominic Purcell (John Doe, Blade:trinity) - guy on death row
Wentworth Miller (?) - smart brother
Sara Wayne Callies (Tarzan & Jane) - prison doctor
Robin Tunney (Vertical Limit) - attorney and family friend
guest role: Stacy Keach (Titus, Mike Hammer) - prison ward
In the first few minutes, you see some things that you can't place right away, but become clear as you watch along, which works out pretty well. Good camera work too. Didn't notice much music (which doesn't mean it's not there, but just nothing remarkable). Dominic Purcell is kinda spooky (in a good way), which is a complment to his acting. There's some side plot about a nephew too, but that's not really the point here, as it focuses around Wentworth Miller's character establishing himself in the prison, as someone who knows stuff, and seeks out who can help him with his mission. He goes to great lenghts to do that, as you'll see in the parting shot of this pilot.
The thing is, I don't see this show go on for multiple seasons. And I think that's great! This story cannot be told in a feature film, or a mini-series, so they create a (hopefully) 22 episode season, and be done with it. Who has time these days to watch an a 11-season-show? I think this could be a refreshing approach to tv-making and I hope FOX doesn't mess it up. But seeing how they are promoting it already, and they picked it up very early, I think they are very much behind this show.
This pilot is not of Alias or Lost quality, but it's pretty damn good, especially for a FOX show
(ok, ok, 24 is/was good too)
