ABC is close to landing a new Darren Star-produced comedy project starring Jenna Elfman and written by bestselling Australian novelist Matthew Reilly.
Sony Pictures Television, which has an overall deal with Darren Star Prods., will produce. Alphabet is set to make a pilot commitment to the project, with a significant penalty -- payable to Elfman -- attached if the project does not go forward.

Eliza Dushku ("Tru Calling") has been tapped to play Eve, the lead character on the hospital comedy/drama "Nurses" (also known as "Philadelphia General") for Fox. Dushku replaces Katheryn Winnick, who has departed the 20th Century Fox TV pilot. Dushku first gained fame for her role on "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" (and later on the show's "Angel" spinoff) and the feature "Bring It On." She'll next be seen in "Nobel Son."

Also for Fox, Danielle Hoover has been added to the Fox 21 comedy "Revenge" as a nurse who recently returned from Iraq.

Meghan Markle will play Kelly Calhoun, wife of John "Preacher" Calhoun (Keith Robinson), in the 20th Century Fox TV pilot "The Apostles."

At CBS, it didn't take Nikki Cox long to find a new gig. Days after being dropped from "Las Vegas," thesp has landed a role on "The Stumps of Hollywood," the 20th Century Fox TV laffer formerly known as "Fugly."

Also closing in on a deal to join the cast is Michael Rapaport, currently starring in Fox's "The War at Home." His casting is another sign that skein is unlikely to return next fall.

Also at CBS, child thesp Tony Gentile -- who's played a young Jack Black in both "Nacho Libre" and "Tenacious D: The Pick of Destiny" -- has also come onboard "Stumps."

At ABC, the David E. Kelley drama "Life on Mars" has been pushed to midseason, giving the producers more time to cast the pilot's star.

ABC execs and Kelley remain high on the project, which is an adaptation of the BBC skein about a detective who somehow travels to the past (where he works to solve his girlfriend's present-day abduction).

Kelley and ABC hope to revisit the casting process after pilot season, when many more actors currently committed to other projects will be available.

"After a thorough search, we still haven't been able to find the right actor for this role," Kelley said. " 'Life on Mars' is a project whose success relies heavily on the strength of its lead actors, and rather than compromise we prefer to keep looking and shoot for midseason."

Additionally, Amber Valletta will star in CBS' drama pilot "Twilight.", Joshua Malina and Nia Long have landed lead roles on ABC's untitled Jon Feldman drama pilot, Autumn Reeser and David Walton have joined CW's untitled Tom Wheeler pilot, and Beverly D'Angelo has been added to CBS' drama pilot "Skip Tracer."

"Twilight," from WBTV and Silver Pictures, centers on a PI (Alex O'Laughlin) who is a vampire. Valletta will play his timeless love, a vampire who made him immortal after biting him on their wedding night. Valletta (ICM, Artistry), whose feature credits include "Hitch" and "Raising Helen," will next be seen in "Premonition."

The untitled Jon Feldman project, from WBTV, centers on four high-powered CEOs and CEOs-to-be (Dylan McDermott, Michael Vartan, Christopher Titus, Malina) who are friends and members of the same golf club. Malina (IFA, Insight Entertainment) will play the CEO of a large pharmaceutical company who is sweet but insecure. Malina's series credits include "The West Wing" and "Sports Night." Long (Paradigm) will play Vartan's character "work wife." She recently did a multiepisode arc on "Boston Legal" and will next be seen in the feature "Premonition."

The untitled Tom Wheeler project, from WBTV and Class IV Prods., centers on a brilliant graduate student (Ryan Devlin) and his friends, who use their skills to solve crimes. Reeser will play the Devlin character's down-to-earth girlfriend, a paralegal and the daughter of an FBI agent. Reeser (APA, Kritzer, Levine, Wilkins Entertainment) recently co-starred on "The O.C." Walton (Phoenix Artists, Anonymous Content) will play a chemistry student, the class' stud.

"Tracer," from CBS Par TV, centers on a skip tracer (Stephen Dorff), a guy who finds people who have tried to disappear. D'Angelo will play his mom, who is in prison for the murder of her husband.
Das "untitled Tom Wheeler project" heißt wohl "The World According to Barnes".

ABC has new plan for Wednesdays
By Andrew Wallenstein

March 12, 2007
ABC is making its summer plans already, announcing a Wednesday lineup set to launch after the close of the fall season.

In addition, the network has scheduled another midseason entry, the comedy "Notes From the Underbelly".

New reality series "The Next Best Thing: Who Is the Greatest Celebrity Impersonator?" will kick off at 8 p.m. May 30 with a two-hour opener. The following week, Season 2 of the unscripted hour "American Inventor" returns at 9 p.m.

Whether -- or where -- that half-hour will continue is to be determined; by then 11 of its initial 13-episode order will have aired. The comedy about a couple pregnant with their first child is from the Tannenbaum Co., Hill Three Prods. in association with Warner Bros. Television.

"Impersonator" is from Peter Engel Prods. and New Wave Entertainment. Michele Merkin will host, with Jeffrey Ross, Elon Gold and Lisa Ann Walters on board as judges.

"Inventor" is from FremantleMedia North America, Syco Television and TV Ltd.

"Traveler," a thriller about friends whose cross-country road trip is interrupted by a terrorist attack, is from Warner Bros. Television in association with the Jinks/Cohen Co.

Duchovny back on TV at Showtime
By Nellie Andreeva

March 15, 2007
David Duchovny is returning to series television.

Showtime has picked up to series an untitled comedy pilot starring the former "X-Files" star, sources said.

The premium cable network has ordered 12 episodes of the project from writer Tom Kapinos, which centers on a writer (Duchovny) who juggles a 16-year-old daughter, an ex-wife whom he still cares for and an insatiable appetite for beautiful women.

It is understood that Showtime plans to launch the series in August, paired with the network's critically praised comedy series "Weeds."

Kapinos is executive producing the project with Duchovny and director Stephen Hopkins.

Reps for Showtime could not be reached for comment Wednesday night.

Piper picked for 'Belle'
British actress to star in TV adaptation
By STEVE CLARKE
LONDON -- Much-in-demand British thesp Billie Piper will play an upmarket call girl in a British TV adaptation of "Belle de Jour," the blog-turned-book penned by an anonymous London prostitute.

The eight-part skein is the most ambitious project yet for upstart web ITV2. If successful, show could become a fixture on the channel, Blighty's most watched after the five terrestrial nets.

Producing the program are indies Tiger Aspect and Silver Apples and talent agency Artists Rights Group, whose co-founder, Michael Foster, is Piper's agent and will exec produce.

"Belle de Jour" was one of several new projects announced Wednesday by ITV television topper Simon Shaps at a Broadcasting Press Guild lunch.

"Belle de Jour" is "based on the diaries of a working prostitute. It's a modern day 'Moll Flanders,' " he said. "We're bringing a major star to ITV2. We want ITV2 to feel like a big channel."

Piper has starred in the BBC's revival of "Doctor Who" and will soon be seen in an ITV adaptation of Jane Austen's "Mansfield Park," playing Fanny Price.

"Belle de Jour" marks another attempt by ITV to raise its game in drama and to win a younger, more upmarket crowd. Shaps confirmed that ITV is remaking E.M. Forster's "Room With a View," scripted by Andrew Davies, and a version of "Frankenstein" adapted by Jed Mercurio, known in Blighty for edgy dramas such as BBC2's "Bodies."

At the lunch the ITV director of television warned U.S. distributors that unless prices for their shows start to come down -- last fall, renewals of "Lost" and "Desperate Housewives" sold for around $1.9 million an episode in the U.K. -- they risk becoming financially unwise purchases for Brit networks.

"These show have become more expensive than making original British drama," Shaps said. "They're an important part of what we do, but the economics of acquisitions have become tricky."

Was Quoten angeht bringt das IMO recht wenig.

Rachel Boston has landed the lead and Amy Yasbeck has been cast as a co-lead on ABC's untitled Ric Swartzlander comedy pilot, while "24's" president-vice president duo of Gregory Itzin and Ray Wise have been tapped for co-starring roles on ABC's comedy pilot "Nice Girls Don't Get the Corner Office" and the CW's one-hour pilot "The Reaper," respectively.

Quinn will play an ex-frat boy with a fancy finance job who is romantically linked to Chabert's character. Quinn (Pakula/King & Associates, Framework Entertainment) recently recurred on "The O.C." and "Vanished." Gonzalez will play a writer who has the hots for Stanton's character. Gonzalez (Pakula/King, the Collective), who recurred on "The O.C." and "Close to Home," will next be seen in the indie "Rockaway." Rao (SDB Partners, Allman/Rea Management) will play an overachiever who has always listened to her parents.

"Twilight," from WBTV and Silver Pictures, centers on a private investigator (Alex O'Laughlin) who is a vampire. Serbedzija will play an ancient vampire of European descent. Serbedzija recurs on "24" this season.
