Tentatively titled Republic of Pirates, it became the first drama buy this development cycle for new NBC chief Bob Greenblatt and his team. Co-written by Jim Hart and Amanda Wells and executive produced by Parkes, MacDonald, Gold and Tom Fontana, the potential series is based on the book The Republic of Pirates by Colin Woodard. Set during the 10-year “Golden Age of Piracy” from 1715 to 1725, it follows some of the world’s most notorious pirates as they forge their own rogue nation, called New Providence, which became the first democracy in the Americas.
Probably spurred by the headline-making Somali pirates, pirate TV projects have been red-hot in the past couple of months, with Graham King and Gale Anne Hurd producing Port Royal for FX Prods. and Fox International Channels, which just tapped Scott Rosenbaum as writer, and Ridley and Tony Scott developing Pyrates, a 10- to 13-episode event-type limited series at Fox created by Barry Schindel and to be directed by Stephen Hopkins, which is eyed for next summer. While the sale of Republic of Pirates comes on the heels of the other pirate projects' announcements, Parkes/MacDonald had been developing the project internally with Fontana since November, and it was picked up by NBC based on a very detailed pitch. Also, there is a big distinction between Republic of Pirates and the other two projects, Gold said. "The 'pirates' of all the other shows we know of -- the ones who lived in the time of Ridley's show and in the time of Port Royal -- were actually 'privateers,' private sailors and ships that were authorized by their governments to attack foreign shipping during wartime," he said. "Our pirates are not 'privateers' working on behalf of other governments. They are disenfranchised or unemployed sailors who are completely self-governing and work on behalf or their own pirate nation."
Mit Tom Fontana hat das natürlich einen großen Pluspunkt, aber ich denke mal das wird am Ende genau so wenig bestellt wie dieses Jahr die NBC-Westernserie. Raue Piratenserie und Network ist einfach keine Traumpaarung. Ich kann mir auch nicht vorstellen, dass das dort aus Quotensicht länger als eine Miniserie funktioniert. Selbst die FOX-Miniserie von den Scott Brüdern würde ihr Geld vor allem international einspielen.

Sky1 has revealed the man who’ll be playing high seas adventurer Sinbad in its new take on the classic tales – simply called Sinbad. Twenty-year-old newcomer Elliot Knight (due to graduate from drama school this summer) won the role in the 13-part series which is now shooting in Malta.
The show (produced by Primeval creators Impossible Pictures) sees the titular hero on the run and cast out to sea after being put under a curse by his grandmother (apparently there was a killing that led to the death of his brother). He then survives a magical storm, and along with the rest of the crew of his ship, the Providence, ends up on an “epic and emotional quest” (the press release’s words, not ours) to rid himself of the curse and generally be heroic.
Knight will be joined by Lost’s Naveen Andrews as bad guy Lord Akbari, with guest star appearances for Sophie Okonedo and Timothy Spall. The Providence’s crew features Norwegian Gunnar (Elliot Cowan), jewel thief Rina (Marama Corlett), the aristocratic Nala (Estella Daniels), the Cook (Junix Inocian) and the doctor, Anwar (Dimitri Leonidas).
“I was thrilled when I heard I’d got the role of Sinbad,” says Knight. “This is exactly what I have wanted to do since I was big enough to run around the garden waving a toy sword! Sinbad is a great character for any actor to be able to play: impulsive, adventurous, passionate, loyal and brave; a true hero. His story is packed with action, adventure and fantasy and I am looking forward to the exciting challenge of bringing him to life for a new generation.”
“As our biggest original drama commission to date Sinbad is a hugely exciting project for Sky 1 HD, and the casting of the lead role was always going to be crucial,” adds Sky’s drama commissioning officer Huw Kennair-Jones. “But from the first moment we saw Elliot we knew that we’d found someone really special who sums up everything that our Sinbad should be – contemporary, spirited, full of life, wit and charm – he’s a truly exciting new talent for the channel.”
Sinbad is due to air on Sky1 HD in 2012.
During its first eight months in television, UTA-repped Parkes/MacDonald has also been active on the cable side, selling projects to USA, Lifetime and Showtime. (The Lifetime project was originally developed through UMS for NBC and will be produced by UMS as part of the studio's new strategy to also supply cable networks.) Brent Forrester Comedy Project at USA: Single-camera suburban comedy written and exec produced by Brent Forrester (The Office), which takes a look at the suburban cul-de-sac over a weekend, where parents’ lives are ruled by their children’s schedules and the idea of going back to work on Monday sounds better each passing minute. Universal Cable Prods. will produce.
Liberty at Lifetime: From writer/exec producer Amy Holden Jones, the show follows Liberty Kincaid, a gifted physician and hospital sheriff who not only ensures care for her own patients but also for those being treated by other doctors.
Last H.O.P.E. at Showtime: Dave Digilio (Tron sequel) is writing/exec producing the project about the Last Hospital On Planet Earth.
Overall, the TV company will try to emulate Parkes and MacDonald's diverse feature slate. "Our television business will include comedy and drama for cable and network, with an immediate and primary goal to produce something great for Bob Greenblatt and his team," Gold said. "We want original voices and characters, and will take some big swings with challenging material -- as reflected in our early development."
Unter dem "letzten Krankenhaus auf Erden" kann ich mir zwar noch nichts richtiges vorstellen (wörtlich genommen als Endzeitserie oder normales Krankenhausdrama?), aber das könnte auf Showtime interessant werden.

Fight Club writer Jim Uhls has been tapped to write Trent Reznor’s HBO/BBC Worldwide Productions miniseries Year Zero.
Based on the 2007 album by Reznor’s Nine Inch Nails, the concept recording criticizes the U.S. government -- specifically the Bush years -- and presents a dystopian vision of the year 2022. Reznor has already adapted the album into an alternate reality game.
Uhls, repped by CAA, penned the screenplay for Fight Club and Jumper.
Reznor most recently picked up the Academy Award for penning the original score, with Atticus Ross, to Aaron Sorkin’s The Social Network. He also composed the score for Fincher’s upcoming adaptation of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo.
Soll also nur eine Miniserie werden und in sehr naher Zukunft spielen, aber immerhin wäre es ein Anfang für Sci-Fi auf HBO.

The Chateau Marmont, which for the past 80 years has served as the backdrop of major events in Hollywood history and the lives of its famous inhabitants, will now take front stage in a miniseries from The Office star John Krasinski and Aaron Sorkin. Oscar winner Sorkin will write the mini, now in early development, which will be based on the book Life At The Marmont by former Chateau Marmont co-owner Raymond R. Sarlot and Fred Basten. Krasinski, who has been the driving force behind the project, and Sorkin will executive produce with Chateau Marmont's current owner Andre Balazs and his daughter Alessandra. Krasinski is also expected to play a role in the as-yet-untitled miniseries, which will tell the interconnected stories of the people who frequented the famed Hollywood landmark over several generations. Since the 1930s, the building, originally built as an apartment complex in the late 1920s and then converted into a hotel, has been the epicenter of Hollywood, attracting film and television actors, literary greats and rock stars. Its guest list through the years has included Jean Harlow, Bette Davis, Erol Flynn, Stan Laurel, John Wayne, Vivien Leigh, Marilyn Monroe, Judy Garland, Barbra Streisand, Sharon Tate, Hunter S. Thompson, Heath Ledger, Keanu Reeves and Lindsay Lohan. Greta Garbo attended parties there during her movie star days and later stayed at the hotel during her seclusion period, James Dean auditioned for Rebel Without a Cause there, Howard Hughes stayed in the attic and spied on women at the pool, F. Scott Fitzgerald had a heart attack at the hotel, Red Hot Chili Peppers' Anthony Kiedis recorded and Lily Allen wrote a song there, and Sofia Coppola set and filmed Somewhere at the Chateau Marmont. And then there is the event the hotel is most closely associated with: John Belushi's 1982 death of a drug overdose in one of the garden bungalows.
Krasinski lives close to the hotel and often holds his meetings there. "I almost feel it's my extended living room," he quipped. It was after one such business meeting last fall that Krasinski found himself waiting at the hotel's valet line for almost half an hour. "I was staring at the hotel and wondered if there had ever been a project about it." He went home, did some research, which showed that nothing had been done about the Chateau Marmont on screen, so he set out to do a project "about the history of the Chateau Marmont in some fashion." He then thought of something else he hadn't seen onscreen, "the definitive history of Hollywood," and the two notions blended together into "the idea to tell the history of Hollywood using the Chateau Marmont as the epicenter." Krasinski quickly secured the rights to the hotel from Balazs and reached out to "the only person" he wanted to write the mini, Sorkin, who was then busy with the Oscar campaign for The Social Network but found the time to read Life At the Marmont and quickly said yes. “I don’t think there is a better writer than Aaron Sorkin," Krasinski said. "The fact that he would do this project with me, is one of the highest compliments of my career.” The mini, whose length is not set yet but is expected to be around eight hours, will span the entire history of the Chateau Marmont from the time it was built to present day. Krasinski, who is producing the project through his Sunday Night Prods., plans to take a role and hopes many of his colleagues will too. "My dream is to have a whole slew of great actors -- some very famous and some not famous at all, to make it an homage to Hollywood." Sorkin is now busy with his HBO pilot More As This Story Develops, which is in production, and also co-wrote the upcoming movie Moneyball...
Ich frag mich wie Sorkin das alles schaffen will, wenn er bei der Serie und Miniserie wie üblich fast alles alleine schreibt. Ohne Koks und schlaflose Nächste klappt das nicht lange. :lol:
