Pilot Review "Out Of Practice" (CBS)

Premise: The series is about a family of physicians who share the same profession but have little else in common. Ben Chase is an earnest young couples' counselor whose family doesn't consider him to be a "real" doctor because he doesn't have "M.D." after his name. But despite their lofty credentials, Ben might be the best prescription for the future of this family.

Starring: Christopher Gorham, Stockard Channing, Henry Winkler, Ty Burrell, and Paula Marshall

Review: "Out of Practice" should be retitled to "Out of Work" since all the cast and crew members will be out of work pretty soon! I can't believe that the showrunners of "Out of Practice" are the ones who were behind "Frasier," series that I enjoyed from episode 1 to the series finale.

"Out of Practice" has a soundtrack similar to the one heard in "Frasier." The laugh track in OoP is...well... laughable! The editors put laughs where there weren't jokes, at least, I didn't think they were jokes!

The cast should have delivered way better performances then they did. Stockard Shanning seemed out of place in this sitcom; she even had a smile during a scene where she is angry! Henry Winkler, whom I adore in "Arrested Development," was not as good as he usually is... All cast members looked like they were forced to act a certain way. They also took pauses and smiled after making a "joke" (joke that I often didn't think was one). Most jokes were too easy as well.

I know this is a pilot, and we shouldn't expect the greatest product as the storyline and characters aren't really shaped yet and since cast and crew have not been working together for long. But thinking of the experience the actors have and, mostly, the fact that the "Frasier" people are behind it, I cannot help but be really disappointed.

This show will need a HUGE LOT of tweaking for me to watch it. But considering the crappy sitcoms we got last year, this isn't THAT bad... but it's not THAT good... oh well...

"Out Of Practice" will air on Mondays at 9:30 p.m. starting on September 19.
Pilot review: Out of Practice (CBS)
Premise: family of doctors, but only main character is not and MD, but a couples counsellor. Only to hear in this pilot that his wife wants to leave him.

Personnel:
Christopher Gorham (jake 2.0, Popular)
Stockard Channing (West Wing)
Henry Winkler ( The Fonz)
Paula Marshall (Veronica Mars)
Jordana Spiro (JAG)

First sitcom pilot to come along this season, and I was mildly entertained. A shame really, with such a talented cast. Produced by the same people that brought you Frasier (Lloyd, Keenan and Grammer) thsi should have been much better. And that wouldn't take much tweaking either, so I hope they get that done before actual airing takes place.
There are even obvious holes in the plot, sad really. At least the cast makes up for all this, and that takes this pilot above the fold. (I'm pondering if I should make a fuss about Paula Marshall being the Lesbian daughter of Channing and Winkler's characters, but no. The makers don't either, which is good, in my opinion)

Verdict: with a little work on the script, this could actually work.
(still not in Arrested Development, Scrubs, Frasier, Seinfeld league then, but hey, last season's new comedies pretty much sucked all around, and this really can be better.)
