Southland Tales is a 2006 motion picture, written and directed by Richard Kelly. A science-fiction thriller interweaving an ensemble cast including Kevin Smith a.k.a. Silent Bob, Seann William Scott (in two roles) and Sarah Michelle Gellar, the film is a portrait of Los Angeles and a comment on the military-industrial newstainment complex. It began filming on August 15, 2005, on a budget of around US$15 million.

Kelly stated that the film's biggest influences are Pulp Fiction, Brazil and Dr. Strangelove. He also calls it a "strange hybrid of the sensibilities of Andy Warhol and Philip K. Dick".

The story is a Philip K. Dick-inspired mindtwist set in Los Angeles on July 4, 2008. Upon the discovery of a new power source which is derived from the Earth's oceans, the world is thrown from its orbit and the mental stability of the planet's masses begin to break down. Facing their imminent doom, the planet erupts into chaos and anarchy.

The film has become highly anticipated in many circles, particularly due to the cult success of Kelly's last 2001 independent film release Donnie Darko. Kevin Smith, who has a cult following of his own, is also part of the ensemble cast.

Original music for the film will be provided by Moby.

The name of the film refers to the Southland, an area in Southern California.

The film will premiere on 21st May 2006 as one of the films in competition at the 2006 Cannes Film Festival

Graphic novels
It has been confirmed that a series of three graphic novels will be released in addition to the film. They will tell the first three parts of the story; the film will tell the final three parts. The titles of the graphic novels are, according to the official website:

The titles of the parts in the movie are:

Part Five: Memory Gospel
Part Six: Wave Of Mutilation
It has been noted that some of the titles of the novels are also song titles. "Memory Gospel" is the name of a Moby song off of the B-side album Play: The B Sides, "Wave of Mutilation" is a song by Pixies originally on their second LP Doolittle, and "Temptation Waits" is the name of a Garbage track from their second album Version 2.0 (later featured on the first Buffy the Vampire Slayer soundtrack).

The graphic novels will be illustrated by Brett Weldele.

Cannes Film Festival
On April 20th, 2006, it was announced that Southland Tales would be in the competition at the 2006 Cannes Film Festival. Along with two other American filmmakers (Sofia Coppola's "Marie-Antoinette" and Richard Linklater's "Fast Food Nation" will also be in-competition), Kelly's follow-up to Donnie Darko will be competing for the coveted Palm d'Or.

Promotional details
In a similar style to Donnie Darko, the official web site, located at www.southlandtales.com, is an interactive Macromedia Flash animation, blending eerie sounds and visuals with puzzles. The taglines for the film include "Warning: you are entering a domain of chaos", "The internet is the future" and "The future is just like you imagined". Sites have also been created for Gellar's Krysta Now character, as well as for a company and what appears to be an as of yet unidentified organization, both of which are set to be part of the movie's universe.

Cast
Lovitz, Garofalo, Oteri, Dunn, and Poehler are all current or former cast members on Saturday Night Live. Sasso was one of the more visible cast members on SNL's Fox rival MadTV. The sketch comedy troop The Mechanicals (official site) are also making an appearance. Apparently, much of the dialogue in the film was improvised by the performers during filming.

Da der Film von Richard Kelly ist, bin ich schon sehr gespannt darauf und die offizielle Internetseite weckt zumindest in mir schon Interesse (http://www.southlandtales.com). In meinen Augen ist die Page einfach ein genialer Weg, um auf den Film schon früh aufmerksam zu machen.

Vor fünf Jahren wurde Richard Kelly für seinen Film «Donnie Darko» als Regie-Wunderkind gefeiert. Der US-Inlandschutz hält ihn mittlerweile für einen Terroristen.

Seitdem die USA den Krieg gegen den Terror ausgerufen haben, erleben auch US-Bürger immer wieder unangenehme bis erniedrigende Überraschungen. Jüngstes Opfer ist der Filmemacher Richard Kelly.

Der Regisseur («Donnie Darko») und Drehbuchautor («Domino», «The Box») wird wahrscheinlich nicht zu den diesjährigen Filmfestspielen nach Cannes reisen können, wo sein neuer Film «Southland Tales» nominiert ist. Denn für das US-Ministerium für Innere Sicherheit ist der 31-Jährige ein Terrorverdächtiger. Das berichtet die britische Zeitung «The Guardian».

Grund für Kellys Ausreiseverbot ist, dass sein Pass «zur Ansicht einbehalten» wird, so der Bericht weiter. Das liege möglicherweise daran, dass der Regisseur mit einem Mann namens «James Kelly» verwechselt wurde, der auf einer sogenannten Beobachtungsliste stünde. Der Filmemacher heißt mit vollem Namen James Richard Kelly.

Passenderweise handelt sein neuer Film «Southland Tales» von einem zukünftigen Los Angeles nach dem Wirtschafts- und Umweltkollaps, in dem es vor allem auch um die Post-9/11-Maßnahmen in den USA geht.

«Der paranoide Verschwörungstheoretiker in mir glaubt mittlerweile daran, dass es mit dem Film zu tun hat», witzelt Kelly. Währenddessen versuche seine Mutter die richtigen Dokumente zu besorgen, die belegen, dass ihr Sohn ein ordentlicher US-Bürger ist. (nz)

Die Liste der Einflüsse, die die Phantasie von Richard Kelly speisen, würde diesen Artikel sprengen. Und um zu verstehen, warum er seinen Film „Southland Tales“, der im Wettbewerb lief, „irgendwie ein Remake von ,Kiss Me Deadly'“ nennt, müßte wohl mehrfach diesen Film sehen, der alles sprengte, was bisher in Cannes lief. Zunächst die Genres. „Southland Tales“ ist eine Kreuzung aus Science-fiction-Thriller, Musical, Actionfilm und schwarzer Komödie mit einem Soundtrack (hauptsächlich von Moby und an signifikanter Stelle einem „Killer“-Song), auf dem die Textzeilen jedes Lieds in irgendeinem Bezug zur Handlung stehen. Diese spielt in den letzten Tagen der Menschheit zwischen einem nuklearen Terroranschlag auf Texas und einer Kreuzung der Raum-Zeit-Linie, in der die Welt verschwinden wird - keine ganz taufrische Idee.


Die Schauspieler - Dwayne „The Rock“ Johnson, Sarah Michelle Gellar, um nur die wichtigsten zu nennen - sind in völlig anderen Filmen berühmt geworden. Los Angeles, wo der Film gedreht wurde und auch spielt, ist eine grandiose Kulisse für die Vermischung von Politik und Celebrity-Kult, drogenverblendete Aktionen und verrückte Wissenschaftler, für Scharfschützen am Strand und Pornostars mit Talk-Shows oder Waffenhändler in Eiskrem-Wagen. Wie schon bei Kellys vorangegangenen Film „Donnie Darko“ sagen die Auguren der Branchen-Blätter „Southland Tales“ keine Zukunft voraus, aber sie haben sich auch beim Erstling schon geirrt. In Cannes jedenfalls, wo es recht gepflegt und trotz einiger überaus graphischer Sexszenen bisher noch keine Aufregung gab, ist Kellys Film mit seinem deutlichen B-Film-Touch und seiner Begeisterung für die verschiedenen Medien, in denen sich vom Schrecken der Zukunft erzählen läßt, eine willkommene Unverschämtheit.

Wirr, laut und chaotisch geht es dagegen in Richard Kellys "Southland Tales" zu.

So I was in attendance last night at the Cannes premiere of Richard Kelly’s Southland Tales. I have to start off by bragging a little. Coming to Cannes, after I found out that The Fountain wasn’t in the Cannes lineup, Southland Tales was THE movie that I was coming for. I loved Donnie Darko. A lot. So I nearly pissed my tux when I found out that not only was I given a free invitation to the screening, but I had my seat 3 chairs to the right of Marilyn Manson, and I was in the row ahead of the attending cast, which included Kevin Smith, Cheri Oteri, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Dwayne Johnson (who deserves that name over The Rock after his performance in the film) and of course, Richard Kelly. Willem Defoe and Charlie Sheen were also there somewhere, but I didn’t get to see them.


Enough about the attendance though. Southland Tales blew away Cannes. Every person I talked to after the screening had no doubt that it was the best film to screen in Cannes so far, which includes Fast Food Nation, Volver, and Wind That Shakes the Barley. It takes everything you saw in Darko, (Apocalypse, Messiah’s, Time Travel) and multiplies it by 10. First thing, though, like Kelly said himself, this doesn’t really make too much sense. It’s messy, we only got parts 4-6 (with the graphic novels due this summer) and it makes Magnolia feel concise.

Early descriptions called this 30% musical, 30% sci-fi, 30 % Thriller, and 10 % mystery. This is not a musical. There is music playing throughout almost the entire thing (Moby’s score is great, he really needs to stop with the pop albums and just do film scores for a living) but there is never any sort of musical number that helps to advance the story. Justin Timberlake (who is the film’s narrator for most of the film) has an abrupt music video that plays about halfway through the film that is exhilarating in it’s location and lyrics, as Justin repeats over and over again “I’ve got soul, but I’m not a soldier” (the singing isn’t him by the way, it’s a much deeper voice).

The film works best as a thriller, though, and that’s what it will be remembered as. The opening sequence of the film is as scarily apocalyptic as anything that I’ve seen since Terminator 2, and sent chills running through my spine that didn’t stop until about 15 minutes into Part IV of the film. As soon as you see what happens in Abilene, Texas on Fourth of July weekend 2005, you’ll know that Richard Kelly isn’t kidding. He might throw in funky-haired scientists, lesbian neo-marxists, and ditsy porn stars who think they have a say in important issues like the war in Iraq, abortion, and “teen horniness,” but that’s all for show.

What’s really lying underneath all the style is a film that really shows the naivety of America, one that is blinded by black and white politics and the yearn to be a star. When the fate of the film is decided by a handshake, and Kelly’s vision of the future comes full circle, we truly feel that, as Krysta Now gloriously claims in the film’s first part, the future is far more futuristic than we ever imagined. This film is Kelly’s Pulp Fiction, and it will be hard for him top it.

The Rock ist da für mich noch das schlimmste Übel (zumal ich als Wrestlingfan sogar noch sympathien für ihn hab).

S. M. Gellar sagt mir nicht unbedingt zu. Hab halt irgendwie immer Buffy im Kopf. Und Stifler bleibt halt Stifler. Dessen Rollen gleichen sich auch immer.

"Southland Tales" auf 137 Minuten gekürzt

Regisseur und Drehbuchautor Richard Kelly ("Donnie Darko") hat seinen Musical-Thriller "Southland Tales" auf 137 Minuten gekürzt. Die von Kritikern verrissene Work-in-Progress-Fassung, die auf dem Filmfestival in Cannes gezeigt wurde, war noch 160 Minuten lang. Kelly sagte, es müssten noch einige Visual Effects beigefügt werden, ein US-Starttermin werde bald bekannt gegeben. In der Science-Fiction-Geschichte, die in einem postapokalyptischen Los Angeles spielt, leidet ein Actionfilmschauspieler, dargestellt von Dwayne Johnson ("Doom"), an Gedächtnisverlust. Seine Wege kreuzen sich mit denen einer ehemaligen Pornodarstellerin, gespielt von Sarah Michelle Gellar ("Der Fluch - The Grudge 2") und Zwillingsbrüdern, gespielt von Seann William Scott ("Ein Duke kommt selten allein").

Erster Trailer zum Film

Sieht in meinen Augen schon mal sehr gut und faszinierend aus. Wie "Donnie Darko" auch visuell recht ansprechend. Da ich auf den Film schon ewig warte, hoffe ich doch, dass das diesjährige Veröffentlichungsdatum stimmt.

Southland Tales erstickt für mich irgendwie an den eigenen Ambitionen. In den Film wurden zu viele Charaktere, zu viel Exposition und zu viele Ideen gestopft. Dass es mehr oder weniger ein Sequel zu den Comics ist, die kaum ein Schwein gelesen hat, macht es auch nicht leichter. Daher weiß ich nicht wirklich, ob ich den Film gut oder schlecht finden soll, geschweige denn, ob ich ihn mir auf DVD kaufen soll. Dabei gefallen mir die Charaktere und die Darsteller, die Ausstattung, die Cinematographie, ein Großteil der Dialoge und Kellys Gespür fürs Surreale doch sehr gut. Die Story ist letztendlich aber ein absolutes, wirres Durcheinander, das einfach nicht funktionieren will und das sage ich als großer Fan von "Donnie Darko". Das Konzept hätte in Serienform vielleicht besser funktioniert. Überrascht bin ich auch darüber, dass Kelly seit "Southland" kaum etwas gemacht hat.

Naja, der Film hat von seinem 17 Mio. Dollar budget gerade mal 300 000 Dollar eingespielt ( Weltweit ).

ICh könnte mir schon vorstellen das er es nun schwer hat noch Finanzierer für seine Projekte zu finden.

Oder aber er hat kein Bock mehr ( der Film wurde ja auch zich mal verschoben, es gab änderungen etc. vom STudio aus ).

Ich bin zwiegespalten. Zum einen ist er extrem gut gemacht, tolle Darsteller, tolle Kulisse. Aber die Story ist so wirr... nun ja. Auf DVD muss ich ihn nicht haben.
