Set of the year!
by Gord Lacey (All reviews) 9/04/2005

Jack wakes up in the middle of the jungle, dazed, confused, and in pain. He remembers getting on a plane, but he's not flying. "What the hell happened to me, and what's that sound?" he thinks to himself. He stumbles through the dense jungle towards the sound, not sure what to expect. Jungle, then sand and water; he's standing on a beach. People are running everywhere, yelling, screaming; they're panicked. The sound is a jet engine, and the people are survivors of Oceanic Flight 815 flying from Sydney, Australia to Los Angeles, CA which broke up in mid-flight. They're stranded on an island somewhere in the Pacific Ocean, thousands of miles off-course. They'll need to band together to survive the mysteries of their new home, but how can they do that when they can't even trust each other?

Lost is a show I've been excited about for a very long time. My friend, Brian Ford Sullivan (The Futon Critic), saw the pilot movie (it was a movie back then) at the Bad Robot production office (JJ Abrams' production company). Brian and I spoke a few days later, and he told me it was the coolest pilot he'd ever seen. Brian was right. I had to wait months to watch the show, and by then ABC had decided to break it into two parts and air them a week apart (then edit them back together for an encore performance). I was hooked from the opening scene with Jack and the survivors on the beach. It was done so perfectly that I can play it in my mind almost shot for shot.

I considered getting an HD receiver so I could watch the show in widescreen, since I knew JJ Abrams preferred that aspect ratio, but I decided to pass (too much money, and too few HD channels here). "House of the Rising Sun," the sixth episode, would be the last one I would watch on TV. It was painful to watch the show in full frame, and I knew the DVDs would be worth the wait. It was hard to avoid the spoilers that came throughout the year, but somehow I did it. My reward would be the entire season in one beautiful package. No 3-week waits for the next episode; I could watch them as quickly as I wanted.

I was invited by Disney to cover the Lost DVD release party in Oahu on August 16. This was a huge deal for Disney, and they were sparing no expense; they knew Lost would be a hit on DVD, and they were determined to promote the hell out of it. I received check discs to watch before the trip (these aren't finished discs; no artwork, and no packaging, but the same contents), and I finished it in 3 days; it didn't stand a chance. I was extremely sick, but as I sat on the couch mesmerized by the show, I almost forgot I had a cold. I would catch my reflection in the TV, my mouth hanging open as I watched the show. Piles of Kleenex littered my living room floor; the garbage filled many episodes ago. When the season was over I let out a little sigh; it's going to be a long wait for season 2 on DVD. I won't call this the greatest show I've ever seen, but it's pretty darn close!

You know I like the show, but what about the DVDs? I'm trying to find words to describe them appropriately, but nothing is coming to me. I could call them "awesome," but that doesn't seem to do it justice. "Cool" doesn't work either, and neither does "great." Maybe an analogy would work better. This DVD set is like a flower that began as a seed planted in the soil but some kind Disney employees. Every day it was watered, and cared for, and it slowly grew until it blossomed into this wondrous thing. The care that was put into this DVD set is obvious. The menus look great; the opening menu has looping video, while the other menus contain an audio loop and a still picture. I didn't appreciate the menus until I got to the second disc and realized they were all different. In fact, you won't see the same menu used twice on the 7-disc set. Yes, every menu is different; main menu, episode selection, audio setup...they're all different. I estimate there are close to 50 different menu screens on the 7 discs. The time and effort that went into those are amazing, especially when you consider most DVD sets use templates for season disc in the set. I should also point out that the menus are completely spoiler-free.

The packaging for the set is attractive as well. The digipak slides out of the plastic sleeve from the bottom, and opens to hold the 7 discs. Three of the digipak panels contain 2 overlapping discs, and the 7th disc stands alone. Consumers will undoubtedly complain about the overlapping discs, but the packaging looks very attractive on the shelf. Double-slim cases in a cardboard case with the plastic sleeve over top would have been preferred. It's a minor issue, but one that should be mentioned.

The 7 disc set contains the 24 regular episodes of the show; the 7th disc contains the bonus material. "Lost: The Journey," a recap episode, was cut from the set due to space but it's included as a bonus DVD when you buy the set from Best Buy.

Video

My decision to wait and watch this on DVD paid off; the transfer of the set looks fabulous! While not as good as the HD episodes would have been, it's far better than the full frame version I would have been watching. I feel sorry for everyone who watches the show in full frame every week; this show is shot for widescreen, and makes use of the entire frame. ABC should be smacked for not airing it in widescreen for everyone, but it gives you another reason to buy the DVD set.

The anamorphic widescreen (1.78:1) picture is damn fine. I didn't notice any dust in the picture, and there's just a hint of grain in a few scenes. I was joking with Damon Lindelof, one of the creators of the show, at the Lost DVD party that I was going to take a mark off for the grain in some scenes. He explained that it's there because they had to "push" the film at the end of a long day when the available light was quickly running out. It was a good explanation, so I won't deduct any marks in the video department (it would have been half a mark anyway, and 9.5 rounds up to 10).

I was extremely impressed with the placement of the chapters on Lost, furthering my belief that the people who worked on this set wanted it to be the best set possible. Not only did they place a chapter after the opening of the show (the quick spinning Lost title), but they also placed one after the "previously on Lost" piece. I hate watching those because it foreshadows what will happen in the episode you're about to watch. I prefer to go into an episode completely blind, especially when I'm in the middle of a marathon session; I don't need a reminder of what I just watched. I'm waiting for the day I can select a "play all" from the menu that removes all the "previously on..." bits, the opening credits, and the closing credits, and allows me to watch every episode on a disc back-to-back, completely uninterrupted. Man, that would be great! Speaking of "play all," you know this set has it, and you'll probably use it; the episodes are so addictive you'll watch a disc at a time, maybe two.

Audio

There are 5.1 mixes that sound good, and then there are 5.1 mixes that make you believe you're there, stuck in the scene with the actors. For 3 days I felt as though I was living on the island with the survivors. Birds were chirping, the wind was gusting past me, and there was the haunting howl of something in the jungle. Characters that appear off screen can be heard from one of the side speakers, while characters on screen come from the center speaker. The rear speakers are used for ambient sounds; there are lots of them. There were a few times I turned by head to see what caused a sound, only to chuckle to myself when I realized it was part of the show, and not something in my condo. I know I'm listening to a good audio mix when that happens. There are English subtitles, and the episodes are also closed captioned.

Extras - How we rate extras

They can be called "bonus features," "special features" and "added value," but for many DVD consumers they're a reason to buy a DVD set. Disney knows this, and they're making it easy for consumers to justify the purchase of the set by filling the set with great material.

Commentary Tracks
Pilot Parts 1 & 2 - Executive producers J.J. Abrams, Damon Lindelof and Bryan Burk
Walkabout - Executive producer Jack Bender, Co-executive producer David Fury and Terry O'Quinn (Locke)
The Moth - Damon Lindelof, Bryan Burk and Dominic Monaghan (Charlie)
Hearts and Minds - Executive producer Carlton Cuse, supervising producer Javier Grillo-Marxuach, Maggie Grace (Shannon) and Ian Sommerhalder (Boone)
Though we only have 5 commentary tracks, they're very entertaining, and the pilot commentary is informative. Sometimes JJ will say, "Can we stop the film here please?" and then they branch to a description, with video, of something that happened in the episode. It's a very cool way of giving the viewer more information without explaining something over other scenes. "The Moth" commentary is the lightest of them all, largely because of Dominic Monaghan. He's serious in parts, but his comments are largely humorous.

The Genesis of Lost (8:40)
The tale of how Lost became a TV show. This featurette includes interviews with executives from ABC, and the producers of the series.

Designing a Disaster (7:59)
A plane crash isn't the easiest thing to simulate, so they bought a plane, brought it to Hawaii, and tossed it on a beach. Well, it wasn't that easy, as you'll find out from watching this featurette.

Before They Were Lost (22:55)
The formation of the cast is told by JJ Abrams, Damon Lindelof, April Webster (casting director), Bryan Burk, and the crew. There are lots of audition tapes included in the featurette, and you can watch the entire tape in...

Audition Tapes (23:34)
Audition tapes for the cast members. Matthew Fox (3:31), Evangeline Lilly (2:53), Dominic Monaghan (1:16), Naveen Andrews (2:01), Yunjin Kim (1:10), Daniel Dae Kim (0:46), Josh Holloway (1:20), Jorge Garcia (1:57), Ian Somerhalder (1:36), Maggie Grace (1:48), Harold Perrineau (1:35), Malcolm David Kelley (1:22) and Emilie de Ravin (2:19). These are pretty interesting, especially because there are things that didn't make it into the show, or actors are auditioning for different characters.

Welcome to Oahu: The Making of the Pilot (33:20)
JJ and company knew the show would make it on DVD if it got picked up, so they had cameras shooting early on. This documentary covers the making of the pilot episode, and features interviews with the cast and crew.

The Art of Matthew Fox (6:07)
This is my favorite featurette on the disc. Matthew Fox took photos of the production and put them in a book for the cast and crew. He speaks with such passion about his work, yet he shows a vulnerability as well. It's a very peaceful piece, and the music fits the visuals perfectly. I asked Matthew about his photography on the red carpet, and later at the party, and I urged him to continue taking photos during the second season. I get emotional when I watch this, and I'm not sure why. I'd love to see the finished book (Matthew, are you reading this?).

Lost @ Comicon (1:50)
The cast and producers headed to Comicon last July where they debuted the pilot.

Lost: On Location (43:42)
A few featurettes that focus on an episode, or a single aspect with shooting it. The Trouble With Boars (5:19), House of the Rising Sun (7:19), Confidence Man (4:24), All the Best Cowboys Have Daddy Issues (4:56), Whatever the Case May Be (2:58), Hearts and Minds (6:20), Special (3:05) and Exodus (9:21).

On Set With Jimmy Kemmel (7:15)
Kimmel visits the set of Lost.

Backstage with Driveshaft (6:40)
Dominic Monaghan talks about "Driveshaft," and the "hit" song that they sang. The producers explain the idea behind the song, and how it was recorded.

The Lost Flashbacks (4:35)
A couple of flashbacks that weren't shown on TV, which makes them "Lost Flashbacks" and not "Lost Flashbacks." I really enjoyed the Claire flashback.
At the Airport: Claire (3:07)
At the Airport: Sayid (1:28)

Deleted Scenes (14:41)
There are 13 deleted scenes from the first season.

Bloopers from the Set (4:17)
Ah, you know what this is.

Live from the Museum of Television & Radio (10:56)
This footage came from an event held at the Museum of Television & Radio. Damn, I wish they had the whole thing on the DVD.

Scriptscanner
If you have a PC you can read the script to the pilot episode while it plays. I don't have a PC, so I couldn't do this.

Sneak Peeks (14:22)
Trailers for movies and TV shows can be found in this section. I have to tell you, The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe will actually get me out of the house and into a theater for opening night; a miraculous feat considering I've seen 6 movies in theaters in the last 4 years. There are trailers for The Chronicles of Narnia (2:33), TV on DVD (1:56), Lost Season 2 - spoiler free! - (0:32), Alias Season 4 (1:19), Desperate Housewives Season 1 (0:32), The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (2:25), Scrubs Season 2 (1:33), Dark Water (2:33) and Jimmy Kimmel Live (0:59).

Easter Eggs (1:58)
Alternate Main Title Sequence (0:22) - Yeah, good call on not going with that! It's not horrible, but the one we have now is better. Want to find it? Highlight the follow text with your mouse: [spoil]Put in disc seven, go to "Tales from the Island" and press left twice, then enter.[/spoil]

Locke and the Orange (1:36) - Want to find it? Highlight the follow text: [spoil]Select "Tales From the Island" on Disc 7, then highlight "Main Menu," press right, and then enter.[/spoil]

Summary

While I appreciate the "mystery" element to the show, I think my main interest stems from the characters, their back-stories, and how they interact with each other. I like that many of the actors are playing characters that are ethnically similar to themselves. Evangeline, a Canadian, plays one on the show, and Emilie plays an Australian. The Kim's, Koreans themselves, play a Korean couple and speak a lot of their dialog in Korean. I enjoy watching the flashbacks of their lives before the crash, and I like piecing together the various events in my head.

I think Hurley is my favorite character of the group; he acts as the heart of the group. He's kind, and funny, and we know where we, the viewers, stand with him. Locke is up there as well, but I don't trust the character. I love all the others as well, but those two are my favorites.

I know viewers were upset with the unanswered questions in the season finale, but let me take this moment to say one thing; what the heck did you think would happen?! Did you think they would wrap everything up in the last episode of the season? Hell no! They need material for season 2! Geez! Okay, sorry for that.

I'm going to put this in virtual print for all to see; this is the best DVD release of 2005. It may not become the #1 TV seller for the year (it'll be in the top 10), but this is the best TV set I've seen all year, and I've seen a hell of a lot of sets. A few people asked me what I would add to the season 2 DVD set if I were given the chance, and while I didn't have an answer for them then, I have some now. 1) I really want a featurette on the music. I think the score to this series is amazing, and I'd love to hear an interview with Michael Giacchino. Add to that a few isolated score tracks in 5.1 and I'd be in heaven. I love the music so much that I'd buy the score on CD (seriously, someone release this, please). 2) Commentary tracks on more episodes. This is a show that could use commentary on every episode. We had a handful of cast members in commentary sessions, so try to get more of them, but I'd love to hear the thoughts of the writers and producers as well. The Dead Zone has commentary for every episode, and I'd like Lost to have the same. 3) Nicknames from Sawyer. Sawyer has nicknames for everyone on the island, and this featurette could include interviews with the writers talking about how they came up with the nicknames, along with clips from the episodes. 4) A fun piece on the background actors. These people stand around, say very little, yet they must have stories. Interview a couple of them for fun, and ask them about their characters (or lack of them, since they're probably "Guy #1" and "Guy #2"). 5) More of the same. I want more interviews with the cast and crew, more behind-the-scenes footage, and more licensed stuff like Jimmy Kimmel, and the MT&R footage. It's hard to improve a set that's so damn good to begin with, so I had to think long and hard to come up with a handful of ideas.

You may be wondering why I'm doing a review of a set I've had for so long just days before the release. Honestly, I wanted my review of the set to be based on the set itself, and not the fun I had in Hawaii. Disney did a great job of the Lost event and I didn't want my time there to influence my review. Sure, I discussed part of the trip in the review, but I've stepped back from that experience and I think most of the words I've written in this review reflect the DVD set, and not the whole experience I've had. If I'm telling you to part with your hard-earned money for a DVD set then my review had better be based on the thing you're going to have on your shelf, and nothing else.

If you watched the show this past season and you're not sure about buying this release then listen to me; buy it. It's a great set, and all the cool kids are picking it up on September 6th (when in doubt use peer pressure). Seriously though, this is a show that can be rewatched, the extras are awesome, and it's the best set of the year; all very good reasons to add it to your collection. I'm going to have a long wait for the season 2 set!

Everyone involved in the creation of this set should be extremely proud. I'll be recommending this for years to come.

Auch bei teevee.org gibt es eine review zum DVD set.

Wichtigster Punkt:

The only real downside to all of these goodies is that they do tend to leave you with the impression that the creators made up a lot of the show’s mythos as they went along. This will probably not sit well with those who fear that Lost isn’t sure exactly where it’s going with all its various plot threads and unexplained phenomena.

Und:

I picked mine up from the local Wal-Mart at 34 bucks.

Vielen Dank schon mal!
