Sleeper Cell creators Cyrus Voris and Ethan Reiff have closed a deal to write Starz’s live-action adaptation of the 2001 Japanese anime series Noir.

This marks Starz’s third stab at getting a script for the project, initially greenlighted to series last June with Sam Raimi, Bob Tapert, Joshua Donen and Bill Hamm executive producing. Original writer Steven Lightfoot was replaced by Sean Jablonski last October. The project was then put on hold but I hear it is a priority for the pay cable network, which has already incurred some production costs, including building sets.

Noir follows two female assassins who team up to fight against a secret society. After discovering they’re mysteriously linked, the two, under the Noir moniker, have to work together until they get answers about why and how they are connected — or until one of them kills the other.

Einerseits ist es ja positiv, dass Starz so ein Projekt nicht halbgar auf Sendung schickt oder es gar unter Abschreibungen abhakt, aber man sollte doch eigentlich annehmen, dass vor einer Serienorder ein vertrauenserweckender Schlachtplan für die erste Staffel vorliegt.

Bei Filmen oder einem Piloten ist das natürlich nichts Besonderes. Siehe z.B. das noch deutlich längere Hin und Her um Powers.

Bei einer direkten Serienorder kann ich mich hingegen nicht an so ein Theater und so eine Verzögerung erinnern. Das geht eigentlich immer sehr fix, weil der Sender so großes Vertrauen in die Umsetzbarkeit des Projektes hat, dass er bereit ist auf den Versuchsballon zu verzichten und direkt eine riesige Summe zu investieren. Es sollte zumindest eine Serienbibel und feste Vorstellungen übers Casting geben.

Starz scheint aber überhaupt keinen brauchbaren Plan gehabt zu haben, was für eine Serie aus der Vorlage werden soll. Vor über 1 Jahr bestellt und jetzt schon die 3-te Radikaländerung am kreativen Ruder und immer noch keine einzige Rolle gecastet. Wie gesagt..bei einer festen Serienorder kann ich mich an nichts ähnliches erinnern. Am ehesten noch Terra Nova, aber auch das war viel schneller produktionsbereit und wurde dann hauptsächlich wegen der CGI-Probleme verzögert.

Hm, stimmt natürlich schon. So betrachtet, ist das etwas fishy. Andererseits geht Starz ja grundsätzlich etwas unorthodox mit seinen Serien um. Vielleicht bekamen sie ja einen vergünstigten Deal der an eine Serienorder gebunden war?

At the top of Starz’s portion of the TCA summer press tour, the network’s president and CEO was asked about the decision to end the costume drama Spartacus after the upcoming third season.

Albrecht said he joined Starz when the network was editing the first season of the show. “When I saw the ending of the first season, I said: ‘Uh-oh’, Spartacus just exited the franchise; it exited the the Upstairs, Downstairs aspect of gladiators and Romans living together.” With the gladiators taking to the hills and the Romans in town, “we had to tell two distinct stories, and that is never the ultimate way to do a TV series,” Albrecht said. The series also had to deal with the departure of beloved original star Andy Whitfield. “Ultimately, rather than trying to string the story with one more argument, one more villain showing up, we decided to follow the historic trajectory and bring Spartacus’ story to an end. Better leave viewers wanting more than diminish the overall impact of the franchise.”

Spartacus creator Steven S. DeKnight, who is under an overall deal at Starz, is already working on his next project for the pay cable network. “Steven just returned from Hawaii where he shot ‘proof of concept’ for a show he’s developed,” Albrecht said. That show is sci-fi drama Incursion, which Albrecht described as “Band of Brothers meets Halo” and involves a lot of creatures.

Albrecht also gave an update on Starz’s upcoming series. Da Vinci’s Demons, which is currently in production, is eyed for the end of first quarter or second quarter of 2013. The series stars Tom Riley as young Leonardo Da Vinci.

The Michael Bay-produced pirate drama Black Sails is currently in pre-production in South Africa where standing sets are being erected with the goal to also build one or two boats. The series is looking at a launch in early 2014, possibly inheriting the Spartacus slot.

Marco Polo is “taking more time than the producers thought.” The series is still in the planning stage as “the challenge to make the series in China has proven as formidable as we feared.”

Noir, which just hired a third writing team, “ran into some creative challenges but…I’m very confident Noir will be on, just not sure when,” Albrecht said.

Der Spartacus-Kommentar hört sich für mich weiterhin nach Alibi an.
Einerseits mokiert er sich, dass die Autoren schon am Ende der ersten Staffel so einen radikalen Schnitt gewagt haben und dann sagt er, dass man eine Geschichte nicht länger als nötig hinauszögern soll.
Die Aussage, dass es für eine Serie nie die optimale Weise sei, 2 sehr verschiedene Geschichten parallel zu erzählen, wirkt angesichts Game of Thrones oder vielen der unter seiner HBO-Führung entstanden Dramen auch merkwürdig.

Das er das Budget lieber in die vielversprechende und kostspielige Neustarts wie Incursion und Black Sails investiert, kann er natürlich nicht offen sagen, ohne ein paar Spartacus Fans zu verärgern.


Bei Incursion hoffe ich, dass die CGI-Kreaturen nicht zu künstlich aussehen. Außerhalb von Game of Thrones ist das mit TV-Budget ja eher selten der Fall und eine Sci-Fi Kriegsserie wie Incursion dürfte wesentlich mehr Creature-Shots benötigen als GOT bisher mit den Minidrachen und Wölfen. Wenn es zu sehr nach Sharktopus aussieht, sollen sie von mir aus lieber mit Männern in Gummianzügen arbeiten. Ging bei Predator auch.

Vielleicht bekamen sie ja einen vergünstigten Deal der an eine Serienorder gebunden war?

Insgesamt wird die Staffel so auf jeden Fall günstiger sein. bzw. würde es im Normalfall. Die Verzögerungen dürften das u.a. wegen der jahrelang ungenutzten Kulissen ja mehr als fressen.

Generell kann ich Albrechts Risikobereitschaft aber verstehen, weil Starz auf diese Weise trotz vergleichsweise mickrigem Gesamtbudget schnell eine beachtliche Originalflotte auf den Sender bekommen hat.

Warner Bros Has ‘Dark Tower’ Decision Looming: And Russell Crowe Is In The Mix


EXCLUSIVE: I’m told that Warner Bros is getting a new script from Akiva Goldsman for the first installment of Stephen King’s mammoth Western The Dark Tower, and that within two weeks, the studio will be making a decision on whether to green light the first leg of one of the most daring and ambitious projects to come along since The Lord Of The Rings. And here is a new wrinkle to add to the mix. Javier Bardem is no longer in the mix as gunslinger Roland Deschain. I’m told that director Ron Howard and producers Brian Grazer and Goldsman have been talking with their A Beautiful Mind star Russell Crowe about playing Deschain. While there is no deal with Crowe, that is the star that Warner Bros will be evaluating as the studio decides on whether to take a leap on a nine-volume book that has a huge following, with Howard, King and their partners planning a multi-platform presentation that could be unforgettable. The story will be told through three films and two limited run TV series.

The Dark Tower is about the last living member of a knightly order of gunslingers, with Deschain becoming humanity’s last hope to save civilization as he hits the road to find the Dark Tower. Along the way, he encounters characters, good and bad, in a world that has an Old West feel. When I last wrote about this, Universal had dropped out and Warner Bros had sparked to the idea of taking on this franchise, possibly with HBO handling the TV component that would bridge the the first and second feature films, with another limited run TV series to follow. Given HBO’s adventurous forays into fantasy with Game of Thrones, it seems like the ideal venue.

If Crowe stepped up as the gunslinger, it would certainly help the project. He has clearly gotten back into the leading man game where he was when making films like Gladiator and A Beautiful Mind. Crowe played a big role of Jor-El in Warner Bros’s Man of Steel relaunch of the Superman franchise, and he is currently playing the title Biblical hero in the Darren Aronofsky-directed Noah for New Regency and Paramount. We’ll know soon if that regurgence takes him into an Old West fantasy, courtesy of what King has called his answer to JRR Tolkien’s The Lord Of The Rings trilogy.

In a climate of fear and remakes–is Sony Pictures actually remaking Jumanji, a film that came out less than 20 years ago?–it would be grand to see Warner Bros have the stones to take the kind of daring risk that seems only to be taken by the likes of HBO, Showtime, AMC and other pay and cable networks. It’s that risk taking that has put those networks in a position of being at the center what will eventually be viewed as a golden age for daring quality TV series.

Weiß nicht ob Russel Crowe nicht etwas zu zart wirkt. Aber er ist ja kein schlechter Schauspieler und ohne zugkräftigen Namen scheint das Projekt ja auch keine Chance zu bekommen. Dann lieber mit einem Schauspieler der vielleicht nicht ideal geeignet ist.
Und Deadline nervt mich mal wieder. Offensichtlich hat der Autor des Artikels keine Ahnung von den Büchern. Wann wurde Roland je mit seinem Nachnamen angesprochen und 9 Bücher sinds auch nicht. Aber egal.

Also unter den Hollywooddarstellern die zugkräftig genug sind, fallen mir spontan schon einige ein, die ich mir eher vorstellen könnte, zb. Christian Bale, Jeremy Renner, Joaquin Phoenix, Daniel Craig oder Daniel Day Lewis
Und vielleicht etwas zu unbekannt, aber für mich gut vorstellbar wären Adrien Brody, Jon Hamm

Russell Crowe kann ich mir schon vorstellen, aber er müsste dann schon körperlich etwas ändern. In den letzten Jahren ist er doch etwas zu füllig geworden, um Roland zu spielen. Natürlich muss der nicht so ausgemergelt rumrennen wie Christian Bale in The Machinist, The Fighter oder Rescue Dawn. Aber etwas kantiger sollte er schon sein.

Wenn das Mega-Projekt inkl. der Miniserien dadurch zu Stande kommt, könnte ich gut mit dem optisch nicht sonderlich passenden Crowe leben. Das nötige Charisma hat er und als Schauspieler finde ich ihn sowieso klasse.

Er sollte dann aber wirklich näher an Gladiator-Kampfgewicht kommen. Vor allem im Gesicht müsste er wieder kantiger werden. Wäre ja ein bißchen seltsam, wenn der nach jahrelanger Wüstenhatz immer noch mit dicken Wohlstandsbacken rumläuft.

Joss Whedon to Develop Live-Action Marvel TV Series for ABC

Joss Whedon fans rejoice: The auteur is by no means leaving behind the small screen following his huge movie success.
The Avengers director is set to develop a live-action TV series set within the Marvel universe for ABC, Disney chief Bob Iger announced during an earnings call, Variety reports.
The news come on the heels of talk (per our sister site Deadline) that ABC is looking to expand the popular Avengers film franchise into a TV series. Any connection between the TV project and the feature film would be loose, using some of its themes and feel, but not necessarily the same characters. After all, The Avengers 2, to be written and directed by the Buffy the Vampire Slayer creator, is still to come.
ABC has long aspired to get a Marvel-based series on the air. A live-action reboot of The Hulk – from filmmaker Guillermo Del Toro (Hellboy) and David Eick (Battlestar Galactica) — was in development for fall 2011, as was Twilight scribe Melissa Rosenberg’s AKA Jessica Jones. While neither project was picked up to series, Hulk is still in the works, with a new writer being sought to adapt the comic, Deadline noted.

Aussie actress Phoebe Tonkin has landed the role of Hayley.



The Secret Circle star Phoebe Tonkin is going from Chance Harbor to Mystic Falls.

The Australian actress, who played Faye on the CW witch drama, has booked a recurring role on The Vampire Diaries, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.

She will play Hayley, someone who Tyler (Michael Trevino) has a past with. Described as wild, sexy and free-spirited, Tonkin's Hayley will first appear in the third episode of season four, as TV Guide first reported.

Executive producer/showrunner Julie Plec shared with THR recently that there would be more characters introduced in the new season, including Hayley and a new mentor for Bonnie (Kat Graham).

Tonkin's entry into Mystic Falls will surely cause rifts between Tyler and his main ladylove Caroline (Candice Accola). In the season three finale, viewers saw Klaus (Joseph Morgan) assume Tyler's body.

Prior to Secret Circle, the ICM Partners-repped Tonkin appeared in Aussie soap Home and Away and H2O: Just Add Water, which co-starred Diaries' Claire Holt.

The Vampire Diaries returns Oct. 11 at 8 p.m. on the CW.

Die ist chronologisch aufgebaut. Ich schau da täglich vorbei.
Kann mir mal bitte jemand erklären, weshalb einige Reviews ''später'' auftauchen. Letzte Woche tauchte z.B. ''Nashville'' plötzlich mitten drin auf und heute ''Vegas'' (beide angeblich vom 18.07.12) obwohl ''Animal Practice'' (20.07.12) schon tagelang drin war.
Letztes Jahr war es genau so. Da musste man die Liste auch jeden Tag absuchen, weil plötzlich mitten drin neue reviews vorkamen.

FX’s Cold War Drama ‘The Americans’ Gets Series Order
FX has picked up its drama pilot The Americans to series with a 13-episode order. The series, starring Keri Russell, Matthew Rhys and Noah Emmerich, will begin production in October for a premiere in early 2013. The pickup comes after FX president John Landgraf indicated that The Americans will likely go to series at the network’s TCA session 10 days ago.

Created by Joe Weisberg, The Americans is a period drama about the complex marriage of two KGB spies posing as Americans in suburban Washington DC shortly after Ronald Reagan is elected President. The arranged marriage of Phillip (Rhys) and Elizabeth Jennings (Russell), who have two children who know nothing about their parents true identity, grows more passionate and genuine by the day, but is constantly tested by the escalation of the Cold War and the intimate, dangerous and darkly funny relationships they must maintain with a network of spies and informants under their control. Complicating their relationship further is Phillip’s growing sense of affinity for America’s values and way of life. Tensions also heighten upon the arrival of a new neighbor, Stan (Emmerich), an FBI agent working in counter intelligence. “We’re proud to welcome The Americans, a taught series that crackles with incredible performances rooted in character perspectives never explored on a U.S. television series, to FX’s line up of quality dramas,” Landgraf said. “We’re equally excited to welcome Graham Yost’s talented young Padawan Joe Weisberg as Creator/Showrunner. He joins a long line of gifted writer/producers who have taken their first shot at greatness on FX.”

Weisberg is Executive Producer/Showrunner, alongside Executive Producer Graham Yost. Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey of DreamWorks Television, who initially approached Weisberg with the idea, also exec produce. The Americans, whose pilot was directed by Gavin O’Connor, is co-produced by Fox TV Studios and FX Prods.

Das dürfte FX erstes Perioddrama sein, soweit ich mich jetzt erinner (von American Horror Story abgesehen :lol: ). Bin schon sehr gespannt. Wobei ich vorallem neugierig bin, ob es wirklich ein "ernsthaftes" Perioddrama alla Mad Men oder Boardwalk wird, oder eher FX-typisch ein wenig auf der over the top Seite. Der Beschreibung nach könnte ja beides sein.

Das mit den Spionen...gab's da nicht wirklich so ein Paar das Ende der 1980ziger enttarnt wurde? Vor ein paar Jahren haben es die Iwans ja nochmal gemacht (die Spione wurden dann ausgetauscht).

FX has picked up its drama pilot The Americans to series with a 13-episode order.

Bei der Beschreibung sehe ich zwar immer noch mehr eine halbstündige Showtime Dramedy als ein (erfolgreiches) FX-Drama, aber vielversprechend ist es durchaus und zumindest eine Staffel gebe ich ohnehin jedem FX-Drama, um mich zu überzeugen.

Michael R. Roskam, who got a Best Foreign-Language Film Oscar nomination last year for his Belgian film Bullhead, is at the center of a new HBO pilot script order, one which teams him with Michael Mann and Breaking Bad executive producer Mark Johnson.

HBO has ordered a pilot script for a drama titled Buda Bridge, a Belgian-set crime story that takes place in Brussels in the near future. It unfolds when a woman is found dead on Buda Bridge, which leads to a series of violent crimes and strange science that bring mayhem to the dark capital of the European state.

Roskam is writing the script and will direct the pilot. Mann, who teamed with David Milch for HBO on the horse racing series Luck (which got cancelled following its second season renewal when multiple horses perished) is executive producer along with Johnson, whose AMC hit Breaking Bad is heading into its fifth and final season. Roskam will be co-executive producer.

Klingt wie eine Mischung aus Die Brücke und Fringe, aber ich denke mal das Sci-Fi Element wird leider keine großen Rolle spielen. Falls doch, umso besser. Solange HBO keinen zweiten Originaldrama-Tag eröffnet, ist es aber sowieso sicherer anzunehmen, dass das Projekt spätestens nach dem Piloten stirbt. :lol:

Syfy has put in development Clandestine, a drama produced by Universal Cable Prods. Written by actor-writer Todd Stashwick and artist Dennis Calero, Clandestine is described as a swash-buckling space drama/adventure and revolves around mercenaries who masquerade as part of an Intergalactic fleet.

John Shiban (Hell On Wheels) is supervising the script and is attached as executive producer, with Stashwick and Calero co-executive producing.

The project stems from an option at UCP had on Stashwick & Calero’s online comic Devil Inside. Stashwick and Calero began collaborating while working together on NBC’s Heroes — Calero was drawing the online comic and Stashwick was recurring on the series’ final season. Stashwick’s acting credits also include The Riches and Justified. He is with APA and Meghan Schumacher Management. Am Ende würde die Show wahrscheinlich "Fall der Woche"-lastiger als mir lieb ist, aber es ist zumindest schon mal ein Fortschritt, dass SyFy wieder an "echten" Sci-Fi Themen interessiert ist. Something that you’ve been attached to—and I’m not sure if you still are—is this live-action Hulk thing. What is the status of that? And also, how has the success of The Avengers and the Hulk character in The Avengers possibly helped the live-action Hulk series?

GUILLERMO DEL TORO: I had one meeting with Marvel after Avengers and we had a very, very good chat. We have a writer that we want to bring on board, a very, very concrete name. I can’t reveal it, but we want to wait for that writer. It’s a writer who is otherwise engaged. So right now we are in a holding pattern until that writer becomes free. Then we’re going to do a new draft of the script.
