Can you talk at all about the new TV series you wrote, Magic City? Do you have any updates on that?

Mitch Glazer: Yeah, yeah. I just came back from Miami to talk about Passion Play, but we start shooting July 6, 10 episodes. It's a dream. I was born and raised in Miami and my dad did the lighting for all those iconic 50s hotels. It basically takes place in one of the lobby's of those buildings. I've written six so far out of the 10. The cast is crazy. Jeffrey Dean Morgan plays the father, running this hotel. Olga Kurylenko, Danny Huston, Kelly Lynch, Steven Strait, it's really an amazing cast, also, Seymour Cassel. We're going to be there from July until November shooting this.

Have they decided on when they want to air this yet? The last I heard it was 2012, but do they have a more concrete time frame?

Mitch Glazer: There are times we have been hearing, but it all depends how we do in post-production. They are talking first or second quarter in 2012, January or March, one of those two. Starz has been incredible. There was no pilot. (Starz president and CEO) Chris Albrecht read the first three and said, 'Let's just make them all.' I'm going back home after years and years.

Is this completely set in the 1960s, or are there flashbacks?

Mitch Glazer: The first show is New Year's Eve 1958/1959 and I think the first season is pretty much 1959. Then we'll get into the 60s after that. Miami Beach was kind of like Casablanca, where you had JFK, Frank Sinatra, this Rat Pack, CIA, Cuba, this crossroads of the world, at that point. I think they had the second-largest CIA station in the world, next to Langley, during the Kennedy years. It's a real rich, cool time. The wardrobe and production design and so flashy and cool, and there is also this deeper stuff as well.

Olga Kurylenko finde ich zwar als Schauspielerin nicht so besonders, aber sie ist natürlich ein Hingucker.

What can you tell me about Magic City?

It takes place in Miami Beach in 1959, in a kind of Eden Roc hotel run by a guy named Ike Evans—that’s Jeffrey Dean Morgan. I was born and raised in these hotels, so I know them. My dad did all of the lighting for the Fontainebleau and Eden Roc.

So you were basically Eloise at the Plaza?

Literally the lobby of these hotels was my childhood, and in those days it was like Casablanca. Everybody went to the lobby of the Fontainebleau. The C.I.A. met Sam Giancana there to give him the money to kill Castro. There was a moment when Sinatra, J.F.K., and Giancana shared a banquette in the Boom Boom Room—they were all sleeping with Judith Exner. I mean, it’s fucking nuts! Danny Huston’s playing this Bugsy Siegel villain, Kelly Lynch (seine Ehefrau) plays a Grace Kelly sort of Palm Beach matron—and wait till you see Olga Kurylenko.

Did you make Kelly audition, or did you write the part for her?

I wrote it for her, and Chris Albrecht was smart enough to not put either of us through that hell. He said, “Absolutely, no problem!” We got really good directors too.

Aren’t you going direct one?

I am. But for now I’m busy writing. I’ve written six so far and there are four to go. They’re coming pretty well, but it’s tricky—I was born and raised here, I graduated high school here, but I haven’t lived here in decades.

How long have you guys known each other?

I met him the second week he was on Saturday Night Live, in 1976, and I was introduced to him by John Belushi, who was a good friend. John introduced me to Bill by saying, “Mitch, this is Billy. The new kid.” But I didn’t write for him until Scrooged, 10 years later.

We know how difficult it is to get a movie made, from having the idea to casting, financing, shooting, and completion. That’s no small feat. And with this kind of cast—I mean, how did you go about approaching Mickey Rourke?

I’ve known him since high school, since we were 15. We have been friends. There were the missing years, of course, when he was just too nuts to connect with. But he was a year younger than me in high school, and my high school was basically 70 percent Jewish, 30 percent Cuban, and Mickey. So it was kind of a dream: I had Mickey and Billy and Kelly—amazing actors all, and of course Rhys [Ifans] and Megan [Fox]. It was a responsibility, because I didn’t want to let any of them down, but it was also a joy. There is a moment in the movie where Billy and Mickey are sharing a banquette together and I was watching and going, “God, this is wild, two guys that have just been nominated for best actor a year apart”—both lost to Sean Penn, I might add—“and they are two guys I have known forever and two of my favorite actors.”

Murray was incredible. There was another actor cast who got cold feet literally three days into shooting and decided he couldn’t actually play opposite Mickey. He worshipped Mickey Rourke and just didn’t think he was good enough. So over Christmas, Billy called and said, “How’s it goin?” And I said, “It’s great, except this guy bailed on me,” and he said, “What role?” I said “The villain.” And he said, “Could I do it?” I went, “Yeah, absolutely!” So I sent him the script and on Christmas Day, like a gift, he called and said, “When do you want me?”


Mickey brings all his—the full jolt of his talent and personality. We were about to do a scene with him and Billy and Megan, and I said, “I think the first time you acted was with my sister, Amy,” and he turned to me and said, “Yeah, and I slept with her.” I went, “What? You slept with my sister? When?” And he said, “Senior year.” I said, “No one told me!” So I had to call my sister and said, “You fucked Mickey Rourke?!” She said, “We didn’t want to upset you.” I said, “I’m upset. I’m upset right now!” This is 40 years ago and I’m furious. [Laughs.]

Eigentlich hatte ich den schon von der "vielleicht" Liste gestrichen, aber Bill Murray als Bösewicht könnte es sehenswert gestalten. Falls der Film ein lachhaftes Desaster ist, würde es sich auch lohnen.

Just two weeks after ABC canceled cult favorite V, the show's standout Morena Baccarin has joined another drama series, Showtime's Homeland. The upcoming thriller, from 24 executive producers Howard Gordon and Alex Gansa, centers on Marine Sergeant Scott Brody (Damian Lewis), who returns home eight years after going missing in Iraq, and Carrie Anderson (Claire Danes), a driven CIA officer who suspects he might be plotting an attack on America. Baccarin will play Jessica Brody, Scott's smart, strong wife. She replaces Laura Fraser, who played the role in the pilot. The series, which also co-stars Mandy Patinkin, is slated to debut in the fall. Firefly and Stargate alumna Baccarin played The Visitors' diabolical queen Anna on V, which ran for two seasons, and recently did a guest stint on CBS' The Mentalist.

Wenn ich noch einen Grund gebraucht hätte, um Homeland zu schauen... Hoffentlich behält sie die Anna Frisur.

Could Halle Berry be doing a TV series? TV industry people are buzzing this afternoon about a hot drama spec that has Halle Berry attached to star. Word is the spec, titled Higher Learning, was sent out today to pay cable networks, with HBO and Showtime among those targeted. I hear that the project, from DreamWorks TV, is eying a quick turnaround, and a decision could come as early as tomorrow. The script, which I hear would have the Oscar winner starring as a college professor, was written by 30-year industry veteran Lee Rose. A queen of TV movies in their heyday during the 1990s, Rose segued to episodic directing over the past 10 years. She also co-ran with Martha Kauffman the WB series Related.

Da ihre Karriere nach dem Oscar nicht den besten Verlauf genommen hat, könnte ich mir das durchaus vorstellen und ein Pay TV-Collegedrama wäre mal was neues. Abgesehen von Boston Public kann ich mich generell an kein erwachsenes Schuldrama erinnern.

Law & Order veteran Sam Waterston has booked his first post-L&O series regular role: a supporting part in the Aaron Sorkin's drama pilot for HBO tentatively titled More As This Story Develops. The project centers on cable news anchor Will McCallister (Jeff Daniels), who has his own show, as well as the show's female executive producer and staff. Emily Mortimer is yet to close her deal for the female lead of the executive producer, MacKenzie. Waterston will play Charles Skinner, the president of the cable news division and Will's immediate superior who hired MacKenzie behind Will's back. In addition to Daniels, Waterston joins recently cast Olivia Munn and Alison Pill.

Kann ich mir sehr gut in der Chefrolle einer Sorkin Serie vorstellen.

Das sind 3 gute Nachrichten. Sam Waterston hat in L&O gezeigt, dass er ein hervorragender Schauspieler ist, selbst als er nach der letzten Beförderung den undankbaren Job des DA mit wenig Screentime inne hatte.
Ich nehme mal an, dass seine Rolle in Sorkins Serie nicht viel aufwendiger sein wird, vergleichbar mit Steven Weber in Studio 60.

Halle Berry in einer Cable Show wäre wunderbar. Sie macht sowieso kaum Filme und bei 10-13 Episoden im Jahr bleibt auch noch Zeit für den einen Spielfilm, wenn sie denn will. Wie str1ke schon sagte, war die Karriereentwicklung nach Monster's Ball sehr überschaubar, wobei ich Gothika und Things We Lost In The Fire sehr gut finde. X-Men natürlich auch, aber weniger ihretwegen. Dagegen waren Catwoman und Perfect Stranger natürlich zwei richtige Stinker.

Über eine Serie mit Morena Baccarin freue ich mich immer (ich habe sogar ein paar Episoden von Heartland gesehen) und wenn es eine Serie ist, auf die ich sowieso schon gespannt bin, umso besser.

Ich versteh ja bis heute nicht, wie Catwoman so gemacht werden konnte. Nicht nur, dass der Charakter überhaupt nichts mit der Comic-Catwoman zu tun hatte (und da ist mir die Hauptfarbe wirklich egal), das Skript war einfach furchtbar...

Da bekommen die ein Schauspielerin wie Halle und dann pumpen die abermillionen in so einen Drecksfilm .. ne,d as werd ich nie verstehen :oops:

Doch, The Voice. :lol:

Smash hätte natürlich auch nicht die ideale Zielgruppenüberschneidung, aber Greys sah damals auch nicht wie die beste Wahl aus und Smash ist das NBC Drama mit dem größten Potential auf einen "echten" Hit. Ist ja auch nicht so, dass die 100 Mio Superbowl Zuschauer nur Männer auf der Suche nach dem nächsten Actionkick sind.

Nein, selbst bei Glee hat es nicht wirklich geklappt. Die Folge hatte 26 Mio, was eigentlich eher enttäuschende Zahlen waren - und die erste Folge danach (also im normalen Timeslot) sank sofort wieder auf normales Level zurück.

Das einzige, was in den letzten Jahren noch schlechter war, war Office, dass nach nur 22 Mio holte und in der ersten Folge danach sogar wieder unter den Staffelschnitt rutschte :lol:

Smash hat ein zu spezifisches Publikum, um es nach dem Superbowl zu zeigen.. am besten laufen eigentlich eh meist Realityshows - weil die eben die ganze Familie ansprechen. Greys lief damals zb auch richtig richtig gut und konnte wahnsinnig gut davon profitieren.

Die höchsten Quoten in den letzten 10 Jahren hatten Survivor: The Australian Outback, Survivor: All-Stars, Grey's Anatomy, House und Undercover Boss... die schlechtesten Zahlen hatte Alias :lol: .. aber gut, wie ABC denken konnte, mit der Serie nach dem Superbowl punkten zu können, werd ich sowieso nie verstehen.

Ach - es sind eigentlich bis auf die genannten Realitys auch in den letzten 10 Jahren keine Serien mehr nach dem Superbowl gestartet (außer American Dad - aber davor lief ne Folge von den Simpsons) - da es bei gescripteten Serien wohl eher immer verschenktes Geld war, den Platz an etwas zu geben, von dem man nichtmal annähernd wusste, wie es beim Publikum ankommen wird :?

@Strike: wie gesagt, schau dir die Zahlen der vergangenen 10 Jahre an - mit The Voice nach dem Superbowl macht NBC genau das richtige. Das wird uns als Serienfans nicht gefallen.. aber die Statistik ist leider nicht auf unserer Seite

In jedem Fall ist "The Voice" die beste Wahl die man treffen konnte und das kann sich dann indirekt sogar für Smash lohnen. Je höher die der regulären Voice desto besser für Smash. Gerade nach dem Superbowl würde ich etwas zeigen, was man so nebenher gucken kann, auch wenn mich das nicht interessiert.
Und mit der Musik-Konkurrenz von FOX kann The Voice jede Hilfe brauchen um The Voice dauerhaft zum Hit zu machen.

NBC's 'The Event' May Continue As Miniseries On Syfy

Minutes after NBC canceled freshman The Event on the unlucky Friday, May 13, the show's creator Nick Wauters and executive producer Steve Stark told fans that there was a possibility for the sci-fi drama to continue elsewhere. That possibility is now taking shape. I hear there are talks with Syfy to pick up The Event as a miniseries. Helping things is the fact that Syfy and The Event producer, Universal Media Studios, are NBCUniversal corporate siblings. But migrating a broadcast show to cable is never easy, and I hear discussions are underway to see if it would be financially feasible for The Event to continue on Syfy. If that happens and if the mini does well, it could potentially launch another season of the alien drama. Syfy has been active post-upfronts this year. The cable network also has been kicking the tires of the Fox pilot Locke & Key, but there haven't been any substantial discussions.

Ich gehe mal davon aus, dass es im Sande verlaufen wird und noch weiß ich nicht, ob ich mich überhaupt darüber freuen würde. Aber grundsätzlich finde ich es gut, dass es inzwischen öfter vorkommt, dass eine Serie gerettet wird. Mit Scrubs, Southland, Friday Night Lights und Damages sogar 4 meiner Lieblingsserien.

It was reported about 10 days ago that after The Event was cancelled, that “talks were underway to continue the show elsewhere” specifically mentioning Netflix.

What we heard: The only people behind “The Event moves to Netflix” were people behind “The Event” and that Netflix wasn’t at all interested and continues to say they’re committed to original series. There was also talk about moving “Event” to SyFy, but SyFy doesn’t seem interested either.

Hab den guten Mann leider nur in Masters of Science Fiction gesehen, da hat mir seine Rolle und er aber sehr gut gefallen. Der Cast der Serie wird ziemlich klasse.
