Is Epix ready to commit to a scripted series order? That is what creative types have been pondering in the past few days, following the demise of the fledging premium cable channel/broadband service's first scripted pilot Tough Trade. It was groomed to be Epix's first original scripted series. But 20 months after originally greenlighting it, Epix, a partnership of Lionsgate, Viacom and MGM, has pulled the plug on the project. The show, created by Chris Offutt and produced by Lionsgate TV, revolved around three generations of a Nashvile music dynasty and starred Sam Shepard, Trace Adkins, Cary Elwes, Lucas Black and Joey Lauren Adams. The project, which was once set up at TNT, also boasted big names behind the camera: Weeds creator Jenji Kohan was executive producer/showrunner, Gavin Hood directed the pilot, T-Bone Burnett served as executive musical producer, and Sean and Bryan Furst also executive produced.

Originally, Epix brass had said that they expected Tough Trade to premiere as a series in 2010. The project, whose pilot was shot 9 months ago, appeared on track with an order for 4 more scripts and an extension of the actors' options. The pilot, which was recut several times, was reportedly screened around the country and did well. But then last Thursday, Epix officially passed on it. According to Epix CEO Mark Greenberg, the network's executives spent a long time trying to fix what they considered some flaws in the pilot, including possibly recasting some roles, and worked on the additional scripts but faced a number of challenges, including Kohan's unavailability as she's been busy with her long-running Showtime series Weeds. "It was a combination of running out of time and dealing with distractions, and at some point we had to make a decision whether it works or it doesn't," he said. "At the end of day, it just didn’t work." FX's recent pilot order to similarly-themed drama Outlaw Country had nothing to do with the decision to pull the plug on Tough Trade, Greenberg said, adding that the network and producer Lionsgate TV are considering retooling the Tough Trade pilot into a mini-series.

Whether or not Tough Trade makes it on the air in some shape or form, Epix's decision to scrap the series is raising questions in the scripted circles. "The overarching issue is that as a network, Epix is not ready to make series orders yet,” one person said. “This sends the wrong signal to the development community that they are not capable to pick things up.” Greenberg countered that Epix fully intends to pick up a scripted series though he admitted that there are no immediate plans for other pilot or series production orders. He also stressed that EVP of original programming and development Laverne McKinnon will continue to build a development slate or series and minis, which already includes a potential comedy series from Larry Charles and a mini-series adaptation of Atlas Shrugged. Epix, whose current original programming portfolio is comprised by documentaries, concert and comedy specials, is now available in 30 million homes through carriage deals with Verizon FiOS, Cox Communications, Dish Network, Charter Communications and Mediacom, as well as a groundbreaking but controversial distribution pact with Netflix. Epix is yet to strike pacts with the top two cable operators Comcast and Time Warner Cable as well as with satcaster DirecTV. Direct TV and TWC executives have expressed reservations about adding the new channel to their lineups, especially following its deal with Netflix that allows Epix movies to stream on Netflix 90 days after they debut on traditional premium TV. Speaking at MIPCOM today, Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer suggested that the length of the window may be tweaked while also touting Epix as a success story. "Epix is working," he said. "It has achieved one of the fastest accelerations from startup to profitability of any channel in history — profitable after only 10 months of operation".

NBC has shut down production on the low-rated Outlaw that airs Fridays at 10pm, but plans to continue to air it at least for the next few weeks.
Eight episodes of the show have been produced and only three have aired so far leaving five in the can. NBC says it will evaluate Outlaw’s performance over the next few weeks. Barring a miraculous ratings turnaround (it’s last two episodes garnered 1.1 and 1.0 adults 18-49 ratings respectively) it looks like production has shut down for good.
Outlaw is produced by Conan O’Brien’s Conaco.

FX Orders Fourth Season of Its Hit Drama Sons of Anarchy

Critically Acclaimed Drama Starring Charlie Hunnam, Ron Perlman and Katey Sagal Is Basic Cable’s #1 Scripted Series Among Adults 18-49

8 All New Episodes Remain This Season Airing Tuesdays at 10 PM ET/PT

With Season Three Finale Airing November 30

LOS ANGELES, October 7, 2010 – FX has renewed its critically acclaimed hit drama Sons of Anarchy for a fourth season, placing a 13-episode order from Fox 21 and FX Productions, announced John Landgraf, President and General Manager, FX Networks.

Eight all-new episodes remain in SOA’s current third season airing Tuesdays at 10pm et/pt, and beginning in two weeks the encore runs will air Tuesdays at 11pm and 1am, Fridays at 10pm and Sundays at 10pm. The third season finale will air on Tuesday, November 30.

In 2010, Sons of Anarchy ranks as basic cable’s number one scripted series in delivery of Adults 18-49. On a weekly, multi-telecast basis, Sons of Anarchy delivers 8.6 million Total Viewers and 5.9 million Adults 18-49. On a first-run, primary telecast basis, Sons averages 4.9 million Total Viewers and 3.4 million Adults 18-49. It is the highest rated series ever for FX.

“Sons of Anarchy is the most popular show FX has ever had, and the #1 series in basic cable for our key demographic. It is also one of the best, most original series on television,” said Landgraf. “FX is grateful to Kurt Sutter and his team of writers, actors, directors and crew for working so hard to make a show that achieves both those levels of success. We congratulate them and look forward to season four.”

edit. wieder zu langsam.

TNT has picked up a noir mystery pilot.

The cabler has ordered the cast-contingent "Hollywood & Vine," a period-piece set in post-World War II Los Angeles.

A Raymond Chandler-style mystery drama, the lead character is a private eye described as "possessing stoic charm and an uncompromising set of personal values that will let nothing deter him in his search for the truth – even if it means taking on the upper echelons of power in a city balanced precariously between the glamour of Hollywood and Beverly Hills and the dual threat of organized crime and a corrupt police department."

Daniel Pyne ("Miami Vice," "Any Given Sunday") writes and executive produces with Warner Horizon as the production company.

The 1950-set pilot is a change of pace compared to the sort of modern-day procedurals typically ordered by TNT and top-rival USA. Period pieces tend to have an uphill struggle in the ratings, but have become more attractive for cable networks in the wake of AMC's Emmy-favorite "Mad Men."

Jenji Kohan, creator/executive producer of Showtime's flagship comedy Weeds and the series' executive producer Matthew Salsberg have a new comedy project, Whales, in the works at the pay cable channel. The half-hour revolves around a group of brilliant and quirky young people, some of them Harvard and MIT graduates, who move to Las Vegas to live in a lavish apartment while pursuing the $10 million prize at the World Series of Poker.

Kohan and Salsberg, who is an avid poker player, are writing and executive producing for Lionsgate TV where Kohan is based with an overall deal. Kohan most recently executive produced the Epix/Lionsgate drama pilot Tough Trade. Kohan and Salsberg also collaborated on the 2007 Fox/Lionsgate comedy pilot Me & Lee starring Lee Majors, which the two executive produced and Salsberg wrote. The project was recently resurrected by Syfy, with Salsberg and Kohan writing/executive producing a new take on it for the cable channel. Weeds, which Kohan and Salsberg executive produce with Roberto Benabib, was recently renewed by Showtime for a seventh season.

It's official: "Napoleon Dynamite" is coming to TV.

Fox is giving a series order to a project based on the indie hit, one of two new teen-friendly animated projects greenlighted by the network.

Fox has picked up six episodes of the show, with the original cast on board as voice talent -- including Jon Heder as the title character. The network also ordered seven episodes of another show, "Allen Gregory," from "Superbad" star Jonah Hill and "Yes Man" scribes Andrew Mogel and Jarrad Paul.

"Gregory" is about the world’s most celebrated seven-year-old embarking on the greatest challenge of his life: attending elementary school with regular kids.

With "Dynamite," the comedy follows the misadventures of an awkward high school teenager and his quirky friends as they struggle to navigate life in rural Idaho.

Both projects are produced by 20th Century Fox TV, with Chernin Entertainment also producing "Gregory." Jared Hess, Jerusha Hess, and "Simpsons" veteran Mike Scully are writing and executive producing "Dynamite." Peter Chernin and Katherine Pope added as executive producers on "Gregory."

NBC today pulled the plug on legal drama Outlaw after putting the freshman series on production hiatus last week. Starting this Friday, NBC will air a second hour of newsmagazine Dateline in Outlaw's Friday 10 PM slot. NBC has been airing a 2-hour Dateline from 8-10 PM, leading into Outlaw. This Friday, the network will premiere new reality series School Pride at 8 PM, which will now be followed by a 2-hour Dateline. The remaining 4 original episodes of Outlaw will air Saturdays at 8 PM over the next five weeks (it will be preempted on Halloween, Saturday Oct. 30, for a previously scheduled Shrek special). The Jimmy Smits-starring Outlaw never found its footing on Fridays. In its do-or-die airing this past Friday, it was only able to match its underwhelming 1.0 rating in adults 18-49 from the week before and drew 4.2 million viewers, down 11%. On the other hand, Outlaw's lead-in, the two-hour Dateline (1.6/6) spiked 23% from the previous week, which probably helped NBC brass' decision to stick with a 2-hour edition of the primetime newsmagazine on the night. Earlier today, Outlaw gained some ratings ground when the Live+7 numbers for premiere week were released. It was the third biggest gainer among freshman series, up 27.3% to a still-miniscule 1.4 demo rating. (No.1 on that list was fellow cancelled new drama Lone Star on Fox.) This marks the first cancellation for NBC this fall and the third overall, following the dismissals of Lone Star and ABC's My Generation. NBC has another shot at a launching a legal franchise this season with David E. Kelley's midseason series Harry's Law.
