Pilot Review "Everybody Hates Chris" (UPN)
Premise: This series is inspired by the childhood experiences of comedian Chris Rock, who narrates the hilarious, touching story of a teenager growing up as the eldest of three children in Brooklyn, New York during the early 1980's. Uprooted to a new neighborhood and bused to a predominantly white middle school two-hours away by his strict, hard-working parents, Chris struggles to find his place while keeping his siblings in line at home and surmounting the challenges of junior high. This responsible, resilient adolescent brings a distinct, funny spin to his everyday trials and traumas.
Starring: Tichina Arnold as Rochelle, Terry Crews as Julius, Tyler Williams as Chris, Tequan Richmond as Drew, Imani Hakim as Tonya, and Vincent Martella as Greg
Review: If only I had UPN! Not only would I be able to watch Veronica Mars properly but I would add "Everybody Hates Chris" to my must-watch lineup!
Even if Chris Rock's voice gets on my nerves after 2 seconds normally, him narrating "Everybody Hates Chris" is one of the best features of this comedy. The cast is relatively-unknown but works really well together and are highly believable. The problems they live are not only reminiscent of what were the problems in the early 80s but are also actual: cost of living, bullying, school fights, etc. We can't help but sing along to the soundtrack ("Ebony, Ivory, Living in perfect harmony...").
Bravo to UPN for creating such a good sitcom.
"Everybody Hates Chris" will air on Thursdays at 8 p.m. on UPN starting on September 22.
Pilot review: Everybody hates Chris (UPN)wird ja ganz schön gelobt, mal schauen, wie es wird...
Premise: Chris Rock narrates his younger years growing up in Bed-Stuy, New York, as played out by actors playing his family and surroundings.
Cast: relatively unknown, but the faces are familiar enough. In the pilot we see Jude Cicollella (24) as the principal.
First of, this show provides an excellent look in the time-period (early eighties), helped very much by the music of its day. That alone makes it fun to watch for me, the cool music. You'd think that we all get tired with yet another show with narration, but when Chris Rock does it, it's just different. Jokes and cracks all over the place, not sparing themselves either. Can this be the first actual good comedy in two or three years? I sure hope so.
