ABC's Once Upon a Time Spin-Off Grows in Size

It looks like someone has had a bite of the “Eat Me” cake.

ABC’s Once Upon a Time in Wonderland, originally conceived as a limited-run standalone series to bridge Once Upon a Time‘s winter hiatus, is now poised to run longer than 13 episodes — and could even get a Season 2 order, if successful.

Once cocreator Eddy Kitsis tells EW.com that while Wonderland‘s exact episode count is currently TBD, it will land somewhere between 13 and 22 — and that the final tally “will be it for the season.”

The freshman run, which revolves around Alice’s (played by Sophie Lowe) tortured romance with a mysterious genie (Peter Gadiot), will tell “a complete story, with a beginning, middle and end,” says cocreator Adam Horowitz. The spin-off, however, could come back to spin “a whole new” Wonderland-based tale, in fall 2014.

Once Upon a Time in Wonderland will air Thursdays at 8/7c, starting this fall.

NBC Eyes 10/90 Order For Roseanne Barr Comedy Co-Written By Linda Wallem

EXCLUSIVE: Roseanne Barr is nearing a return to primetime. I’ve learned that NBC is finalizing a deal for a new comedy series the Roseanne alumna is co-writing with Nurse Jackie co-creator/former co-showrunner Linda Wallem. I hear the project, a multi-camera family comedy, is intended as going straight to series under the 10/90 model used by Lionsgate’s Debmar-Mercury for the Tyler Perry sitcoms on TBS and most recently Anger Management at FX. Universal TV is producing in what would be the studio’s first stab at the 10/90 template. This also would mark the first broadcast network to take on the model, which involves a straight-to-series 10-episode order that triggers a 90-episode back order if a ratings mark is hit. I hear Barr and Wallem are currently working on the script in Hawaii where Barr resides.

Barr has experience with long-running family sitcoms: Her eponymous ABC comedy aired 221 episodes and has had a successful afterlife in syndication, which is key for series produced under the 10/90 model. Those series also tend to rely on seasoned sitcom stars in the lead as has been the case with Anger Management (Charlie Sheen) and FX’s upcoming Saint George (George Lopez) and untitled Kelsey Grammer/Martin Lawrence sitcom. NBC’s Roseanne Barr project stems from a development deal she signed with NBC and Universal TV in January, which also included an arc on the network’s flagship comedy The Office.

During the 2011-2012 season, Barr developed a multi-camera comedy at NBC, the 20th TV-produced Downwardly Mobile, which went to pilot. Barr is repped by Paradigm and manager Steven Greener; Wallem is with CAA.

EW hat geschrieben:'Once Upon a Time in Wonderland' getting more episodes
by James Hibberd

ABC’s Once Upon a Time in Wonderland is going to be more than 13 episodes. In fact, it’s not really a limited series at all.

Here’s the scoop. Depending on what you’ve previously read, some of this may sound familiar and some will be new. The model that’s being formed behind the scenes for Wonderland is really unique and there’s been some understandable confusion out there as the plan has come together.

When Wonderland was announced as a limited series in May, it received 13 episodes — the standard order for a new drama. But ABC is about to add some additional episodes to that order (we can’t tell you how many, but the total is not 13 episodes and it’s not 22).

Now with a typical new series pickup, producers hope and pray their ratings in the fall are big enough to get an additional “back 9″ order so they end up with a full 22-epsiode season. But Wonderland creators Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis have a different vision for this show: a self-contained epic romance that’s planned in advance from start to finish — no filler! That means there will be no additional episodes ordered for the season beyond the first order, so the showrunners can break down the entire story before the first episode ever airs. That’s why there are more episodes being ordered now-ish, because the writers have figured out how many hours they need.

“We really want to tell the story without having to worry about how to stretch it for five years,” Kitsis tells EW. “The upfront order will be it for the season.” Horowitz adds, “This is not meant to be a 22-episode season. Whatever it ends up being, we’ll have told a complete story, with a beginning, middle and end.”

Wonderland will focus on the romance and adventure of two characters, Alice (Sophie Lowe) and a genie named Cyrus (Peter Gadiot), making it easy for casual fans to dive in. By comparison, the Once Upon flagship was always designed to tell a complex multi-year tale. “The DNA of this show is different and consciously so,” Horowitz says. “The idea is you can just come on in and enjoy the ride.” Kitsis adds, “If you’ve seen Once, you’ll be rewarded; if you haven’t, you won’t miss a beat.”

So that means Wonderland will only be one season, right?

Wrong! Or rather: Quite possibly and hopefully wrong!

Wonderland has been called an “anthology” series and “limited” series. Neither is precisely correct. It’s only “limited” in terms of the first season telling a close-ended story in less than 22 episodes, not because ABC and the showrunners wouldn’t do more seasons (ABC executives may be willing to get a little creative with Wonderland, but they’re not Mad Hatters — a hit is a hit). ABC will renew the show for another close-ended adventure if the show is a success.

But unlike an anthology series — such as American Horror Story, which tells an entirely new story each season with new characters — Wonderland is expected to continue using most of the same characters. “If the audience responds and people love these characters, the plan would be to bring it back next year and tell a whole new story,” Horowitz says.

Put another way: Wonderland is sort of like a fairytale version of 24 — a heavily serialized drama with stand-alone seasons using the same core cast (only with fewer rogue nukes, presumably).

Stark bleiben..
RIP ‘Happy Endings’: Series Officially Over After Three Seasons

ABC‘s comedy Happy Endings is not going to live up to its name but has cemented its cult status with an untimely death. I hear series’ leading studio Sony Pictures TV has ended its efforts to find a new home for the underrated series as it faces the expiration of the cast’s options this weekend. Sony did try hard, starting to explore a possible future for Happy Endings well in advance of ABC’s May decision not to order a fourth season. Cable network USA, which is re-entering the half-hour comedy space this fall with off-network acquisition Modern Family, originally expressed interest in early April. It entered talks with Sony immediately after ABC made the cancellation decision the Friday before upfronts but, three weeks later, the network opted not to proceed with the pickup to focus on its original comedy series. While USA was considered the only real play for Happy Endings, Sony TV didn’t give up and continued to search for ways to keep Happy Endings until it ran out of time with the cast options.

FX darf Anger Management flexibel einsetzen. Egal was in den meisten Blogkommentaren steht.

Ich drücke meine Daumen natürlich für Krysten "I Love Even Her Ass" Ritter.
NBC’s ‘Assistance’ Gets Order For 3 More Scripts, Actors’ Options Extended

I hear NBC is keeping comedy pilot Assistance in contention with an order for three more scripts. Additionally, I hear producing studio Universal TV has extended the options on several cast members, including star Krysten Ritter and pilot standout Alfred Molina. Assistance, from Will Ferrell and Adam McKay’s Gary Sanchez Prods, is based on the play by Leslye Headland, who wrote the adaptation. It centers on an idealistic “working girl” assistant (Ritter) who is pulled between her colleague (“work husband”) and her real-life fiance while trying to manage a demanding (translation: crazy) boss.

John Mulaney’s NBC Comedy Pilot Eyes Series Pickup At Fox With Script Order

EXCLUSIVE: The untitled John Mulaney/Lorne Michaels multi-camera comedy pilot, which missed the cut at NBC last month, has found a new life at Fox. I’ve learned that Fox has ordered a script, described as a quick pass at the script by Mulaney that got a pilot order at NBC. If the network likes the new version, the project will receive a six-episode series order. I hear Fox brass are big fans of Mulaney and were interested in the project with some script and potential cast adjustments. I hear star Mulaney and co-star Martin Short and set to continue, with the future of the other cast members unclear. The cast of project, a young ensemble comedy based loosely on Mulaney’s life, includes Saturday Night Live‘s Mulaney and Nasim Pedrad as well as comedy veterans Short and Elliot Gould.

The pilot, from Universal TV and 3 Arts, was in contention for a series order at NBC but ultimately got a pass. Universal TV is becoming a major comedy series supplier for Fox. The network already has two half-hour series from the NBC-affiliated studio on the fall schedule, returning comedy The Mindy Project, which was also originally developed for NBC, and another vehicle toplined by an SNL alum, the Andy Samberg starrer Brooklyn Nine-Nine, which Fox landed in a bidding war last summer. Mulaney wrote the script and is executive producing the project with Andy Ackerman, who directed the NBC pilot and is staying on as director, Michaels, Andrew Singer, Dave Becky and David Miner.

NBC’s Craig Robinson Comedy Remains In Contention With Cast Options Extension

UPDATED: Another NBC pilot that narrowly missed the cut to series is staying alive. I’ve learned that the network has extended the options on the entire cast of the untitled Craig Robinson pilot, which I hear also is getting an order for three additional scripts. The project, written by Owen Ellickson, centers around a talented musician (Robinson) who adjusts to his new life as a middle school music teacher, where he maneuvers precocious kids, teacher politics, and the temptations of single moms. The cast of the pilot, from Universal TV, Deedle-Dee Prods and 3 Arts, also includes Larenz Tate, Amanda Lund and Jean Smart. Ellickson is executive producing with Greg Daniels, Tracy Katsky, Gabe Miller and Jonathan Green, who helped rewrite the pilot script, Howard Klein and Mark Schulman. Robinson serves as producer. The Craig Robinson pilot joins fellow NBC/Uni TV comedy pilot Assistance, which recently received an order for three more scripts and extended the options of several cast members, including Krysten Ritter and Alfred Molina. Similarly, NBC ordered another script for the John Stamos-starring drama I Am Victor with an eye toward a new pilot order for a midseason series pickup. That pilot also re-upped several cast members, led by Stamos. Additionally, NBC/NBCU’s John Mulaney comedy pilot is now in series consideration at Fox with a script order.

ABC Comedy Pilot ‘Middle Age Rage’ Stays Alive WIth Cast Options Extension

EXCLUSIVE: ABC is keeping single-camera comedy pilot Middle Age Rage in contention by extending the options on the cast until September so it has more time to contemplate the project’s future. Created by Cheryl Holliday, Middle Age Rage stars Annie Mumolo as a middle-aged wife and mother who is fed up with feeling invisible and begins to speak up and demand the respect she feels she’s earned. The Amblin TV/ABC Studios pilot flew largely under the radar until it started getting positive feedback after it was delivered to the network. Middle Age Rage was among the large pool of half-hour pilots that were in the running at ABC this year. The network and ABC Studios also tried to get another well-received comedy pilot that didn’t make the cut in May, Bad Management, picked up to series through an alternative production model but the idea didn’t pan out. Co-starring with Mumolo on Middle Age Rage are Will Sasso, Melanie Leishman, Wyatt Oleff, Kellee Stewart and Skyler Gisondo.

NBC’s ‘I Am Victor’ Extends Options On John Stamos & 5 Co-Stars, Eyes New Pilot

EXCLUSIVE UPDATED: In another indication that they are high on drama pilot I Am Victor, I’ve learned that NBC and pilot’s producer Universal TV have extended the options on six cast members, led by star John Stamos, who plays the title character, an LA divorce attorney. Also picked up are Matthew Lillard, who plays Victor’s best friend; Angela Sarafyan, who plays Victor’s sassy assistant; Kosha Patel and Josh Zuckerman, who play young legal associates/interns; and McKaley Miller, who plays Victor’s daughter.

Earlier this month, the network commissioned a rewrite by Mark Goffman who wrote the original pilot. Based on Jo Nesbo’s book, I Am Victor centers on Victor Port (Stamos), a high-powered divorce attorney with a unique view of relationships. As we reported, the project is being retooled and likely will focus more on Victor’s legal cases while still dealing with his personal life as NBC brass liked the show’s legal world and Stamos, who tested very strong. The decision which actors to retain supports speculation that the two lead female characters, played in the original pilot by Lorenza Izzo and Megan Dodds, may be melded into one boss-type figure who would have a flirty relationship with Victor in the vein of ABC’s Castle. If NBC execs sign off on the new script, I hear a pilot reshoot is being eyed for the late August for a potential nine-episode midseason order.

Comedy ‘The Assistants’ Extends Cast Member Options As Fox Eyes New Pilot

Warner Bros has extended the options of three series regulars from its Fox comedy pilot The Assistants: Brittany Snow, Stephen Root and Catherine O’Hara. Also picked up is recurring guest star Jillian Bell, who is a regular on another show, Comedy Central’s Workaholics. The decision to extend options, which expire at the end of the week, was made with an eye toward re-piloting the project, though there has been no formal new pilot order from Fox yet. Written by Sherry Bilsing-Graham and Ellen Kreamer based on the blog and book To My Assistant by Lydia Whitlock, The Assistants is set in a busy Manhattan law firm where the assistants have vowed that if they ever get to the top, they will never treat their assistants the way they’ve been treated by their bosses. The single-camera project was an early favorite of Fox brass, who were very high on the cast, mainly the actors who have now been extended. The Assistants factored into the network’s series pickup conversation, and though it didn’t get the nod last month, Fox left it in consideration. The Assistants is produced by Lin Pictures and WBTV, with Bilsing-Graham, Kreamer, Dan Lin and Jennifer Gwartz executive producing.
