Jesse Eisenberg Cast as Lex Luthor in Batman Vs. Superman
And Jeremy Irons will play Alfred!
Jesse Eisenberg has been cast as the Man of Steel's ultimate foe Lex Luthor in Warner Bros. and Zack Snyder's Batman Vs. Superman, while Jeremy Irons has also joined the film as Batman's loyal butler Alfred.
Variety has the report on the surprise casting. The question of who would play Lex has been a topic of much discussion among fans ever since the Man of Steel sequel was announced at Comic-Con last July, as it has largely been assumed that Lex would appear in the film. Names like Bryan Cranston and Joaquin Phoenix had been floated regarding the part, but it looks like the master of Facebook himself, Eisenberg, will be running LexCorp when the film hits on May 6, 2016. (It should also be noted that Eisenberg is not bald, but is quite capable of shaving his head for the part. See how that works, Internet? You don’t automatically have to be bald to play Lex!)
“Lex Luthor is often considered the most notorious of Superman’s rivals, his unsavory reputation preceding him since 1940,” Snyder said. “What’s great about Lex is that he exists beyond the confines of the stereotypical nefarious villain. He’s a complicated and sophisticated character whose intellect, wealth and prominence position him as one of the few mortals able to challenge the incredible might of Superman. Having Jesse in the role allows us to explore that interesting dynamic, and also take the character in some new and unexpected directions.”
Also coming out of nowhere is Jeremy Irons playing Alfred Pennyworth. Again, we had all heard murmurs that Alfred would be in the film, but this is the first confirmation that Bruce Wayne’s majordomo will be in the cave alongside Batman.
“As everyone knows, Alfred is Bruce Wayne’s most trusted friend, ally and mentor, a noble guardian and father figure,” the director continued. “He is an absolutely critical element in the intricate infrastructure that allows Bruce Wayne to transform himself into Batman. It is an honor to have such an amazingly seasoned and gifted actor as Jeremy taking on the important role of the man who mentors and guides the guarded and nearly impervious façade that encapsulates Bruce Wayne.”
It was just a couple of weeks ago that Warner Bros. pushed the release on Batman Vs. Superman (or whatever it’s called) from July, 2015, to May, 2016. Production on the film was also moved, and is now expected to start in the second quarter of this year.
Henry Cavill will return as Superman with Ben Affleck debuting as Batman. Gal Gadot will play Wonder Woman, and Man of Steel’s Amy Adams, Laurence Fishburne, and Diane Lane are all expected to return as well.
