CBS Discharges 'JAG'
(Monday, April 04 02:48 PM)
LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) "JAG," the longest-running drama series on the CBS schedule, will end its 10-season tour of duty later this month.
The show, which has called CBS home for the past nine seasons after one year on NBC, will bow out on Friday, April 29 with an episode that creator Don Bellisario promises will bring at least some resolution to the romantic tension between lead characters Harm (David James Elliott) and Mac (Catherine Bell).
The cancellation, announced Monday (April 4) by CBS and producer Paramount Network TV, wasn't a big surprise. Elliott signed a development deal with ABC in February, signaling his departure from the series. Ratings have also fallen in the past two seasons, following the show's move from Tuesday to Friday nights.
Nonetheless, CBS chairman Les Moonves praised the series for helping spark the ratings turnaround at the network in the late 1990s.
"In my opening days at CBS, we needed to rebuild; we needed compelling, well-produced shows that would appeal to a wide audience," Moonves says in a statement. "'JAG' was one of the first series to fill that void. ... When we moved it to Tuesday nights in 1997, it played a key role in CBS's positive sea change in the ratings war. Since then, 'JAG' has been one of the cornerstones of our schedule and a very influential part of the network's turnaround."
"JAG" draws about 9.8 million viewers per week, down from 11.6 million at this time last year. In 2002-03, its final year airing on Tuesdays, it averaged more than 13 million viewers. But the fact that the show survived even past its first year on NBC is a little bit remarkable. NBC dropped the show after its first year, 1995-96, but CBS eventually picked it up and returned it to the airwaves in January 1997.
"We've had an amazing run, particularly for a series that was once cancelled," Bellisario says. "Over the last 10 years we have had an opportunity to shine a spotlight on our armed forces and call attention to issues of significant importance to our country as well as the men and women who serve it."
CBS says the finale, scheduled for 9 p.m. ET April 29, will find Harm and Mac "forced to face [their] feelings once and for all" following a "bombshell" revelation by Gen. Cresswell.
